Learning math in that way sucked in the beginning, but I felt it helped me enjoy mathematics more when I was finally able to slow down and appreciate it.
The real issue is that the SAT is no longer g-loaded. The College Board noticed that Whites did better than blacks and Hispanics in the very g-loaded verbal portion of the old SAT so they changed it so it could be gamed through test prep. But instead of helping Blacks or Whites, it just made it easier for Asians study for.

My daughter did neither and both scored a perfect 160 on the reasoning GT test and later a 91 on the CBE after only studying for a couple weeks. Some kids have it. Some don't. Asian parents seem to always force their kids even if they don't have it. She's the only white person in her GT classes.

I know for a fact that you can study for "the test" without understanding the underlying principles of the material. When I took Linear Algebra in college I just studied the questions in the book and the packets the professor gave us. The test questions were always slight variations of the material. I got good grades but despite that all of the knowledge was piecemeal and disconnected in my head. I spent the summer afterwards self studying to actually understand LA on a fundamental level. Grinding does work, but you need to be conscientious enough to seek knowledge outside of grade grubbing to get a real grasp on anything. This is why curiosity matters.
If your genuinely smart you don't need to. If your genuinely smart that sort of stuff is so effortless is becomes a problem later in life becuase you never had to try even in AP classes right up until a certain point, for some it might be late high-school, for others well into uni, but regardless eventually there comes a point where information density becomes high enough that for the first time in their life they actually have to try and a lot of gifted kids burn out there becuase they're too proud to start developing the study habits normal kids who didn't just retain everything they read immediately had from the start. Part of it is laziness but part of it is an identity crisis where ones ego has become incredibly inflated for so many years as being smart it and it has become part of their identity so not being smart enough and having to study for the first time fucks with those people's head and self image in a way it wouldn't anyone else.
