Why aren't MRE style foods more commonly utilised in non-military scenerios? Zero waste, zero prep or skill required to use them and they can be optomized for balanced nutrition. Seems like a far less wasteful way of feeding a population if done on mass.

MREs keep you alive when proper nourishment is not available, thats their single purpose.

If you consume them for a prolonged time your long term health and fitness will suffer tremendously, just as with processed and or fast food.
