Tonight at the ACP Wisconsin event, I met a woman from the Donbas.She described how, after the 2014 coup, Ukrainian neo-Nazis openly patrolled the streets and gunned people down with impunity, once fascist battalions were absorbed into the Ukrainian military.She had never cared about politics before. But being displaced by the violence forced her to learn. She eventually became a Communist, based on their historic role in fighting fascism and came to recognize that, without Lenin, Ukraine likely wouldn’t even exist as a state.I wish Western left-liberals like Kyle Kulinski, who still talk about “Putin’s offensive & unprovoked invasion of Ukraine” would spend a few minutes talking to people like this, who actually lived through the fascist terror unleashed after 2014.Instead, any discussion of Ukrainian fascism or terrorism is dismissed as “Putin propaganda.” That dismissal gets a lot harder when you’re listening to someone who survived it.Of course war is horrific, and in this war an entire generation of Ukrainians is being destroyed. But when fascists bring war to your doorstep, the choice is not an abstract one. You either fight back, or you accept life under Nazi occupation and terror.The same choice that so many East Europeans were faced with years ago during the Second World War, where those who fought against fascism went down in history as heroes.Ukrainian fascism is what started this war, not in 2022, but in 2014. Sadly there is a lot of infighting on the left. I just go with DSA but that is technically a Socialist party but they have way more members than any of the Communist parties so that is the horse I back.
