It’s not really that. Riding trains in Europe makes more sense because of the geography. North American geography is so spread out that planes are necessary. Riding a train from New York to LA would be a huge pain in the ass and would take several days even if it went 200 mph. You could get some dirt cheap Spirit Airlines ticket and be there in 4 hours.

It takes all day to take a train from Zurich to Mainz but that same distance would be like an hour of travel time in the US if you just bring a carry-on and check in online. I am curious about europe. Are your rail lines exclusive to passenger rail?
Our lines here are maintained by freight companies. Laws exist which state freight must yield to passenger to try to encourage more rail travel. So the rail companies decided to make their freight trains 0.501 miles long when the yield areas are 0.5 miles long which results in passenger trains being forced to yield.
A 2 day train ride turns into a 4 day ride due to this. It just makes personal vehicles much faster for transport at a short distance. Even accounting for things like heavy traffic the roads are faster than the trains but I am just using the Nashville Star train system because that is the only example I have around here.

I live on an acre surrounded by nature and can hop in my car and be downtown in a bustling metropolis in 45 minutes. It would take me that long just to get to the train that's supposed to go somewhere else.

The train is always atleast 30 min to late on a good day and overcrowded
The seats are nightmarishly uncofortable and make your back hurt like hell if you have to sit for more than an Hour and crime on train is a real problem

no, freight and passenger share most railways (I'm not sure about the exclusively high-speed tracks), but freight usually moves at night because it has to yield to passenger trains. There is a fuckton of congestion though at the moment due to old infrastructure and they are investing close to 100 billion to renew it. High-speed rail vs cars in germany makes sense if you live in a city, for example if you live in Berlin and want to go to Hamburg thats a 1.5h rail vs 3h drive or berlin - munich is 4h rail vs 6-7h car. The main benefit of high-speed trains is comfort, you can use the time on the train for work or entertainment, while driving 7h through constant traffic drains you. The benefits are less when you have to catch connecting trains etc and when there's loud nafris, arabs and niggers on board, but desu I seldomely encounter them on high-speed rail cause its quite expensive
