They had been told to expect pneumonia, not viral sepsis.272 Almost every repurposed drug that shows effectiveness at treating COVID-19 has a secondary function as an antioxidant. For example, budesonide, famotidine, and fluvoxamine all behave like antioxidants, in addition to their canonical functions as a steroid, a histamine H2 receptor blocking antacid, and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, respectively.273, 274, 275, 276

Most studies enrolled patients suffering from hyperinflammatory COVID-19 sepsis, who had been symptomatic for over a week and who no longer had any viral load, and for whom antivirals were completely useless. They did not test prophylaxis or prompt and early use of antivirals in most trials.
