No, the apostolic fathers and the historic Church would not take “I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse” (Genesis 12:3) as a command for Christians to support Benjamin Netanyahu or any particular modern Israeli leader and their policies.

Genesis 12:3 is first a promise of God’s sovereign action toward Abraham and his descendants, not a political roadmap for later believers. In the New Testament, Paul understands the Abrahamic promises as fulfilled in Christ and extended to all who belong to Him: “If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Galatians 3:16–29). The center of gravity shifts from a blanket endorsement of any one nation-state or government to Christ and His worldwide people.

The early fathers, following Paul, usually treat “Israel” as a theological reality rather than a foreign‑policy category. They speak of the Church as the renewed or spiritual Israel, composed of Jews and Gentiles united in Christ. Their concern is faith, holiness, and perseverance, not which ruler in a given land should receive Christian backing. When they discuss secular authorities (Roman emperors, local governors), they stress praying for rulers, obeying them where conscience allows, and refusing obedience when rulers command evil. Support is conditioned by justice and righteousness, not ethnicity or geography.

Carrying that pattern forward, historic Christian teaching says believers should seek justice, protect the vulnerable, reject antisemitism, and pray for the good and salvation of the Jewish people. But Christians are free—and obligated—to evaluate any government, including Israel’s, by moral criteria drawn from the gospel. That means a Christian might support, oppose, or be mixed on Netanyahu’s policies, but cannot claim Genesis 12:3 as a simple mandate to back him.
