So the way this works is there is a cult to the line of Muhammed in Iran. This cult lies dormant until it finds a suitable charismatic leader like Ali Khomeini among the prophet's descendants. Someone who really believes in the original teachings. When they find this person, the cult activates and sweeps into power. Even when that person dies, the cult continues on unless it is totally suppressed somehow. Iran is way too big a nation to successfully suppress, even against American weapons. There are gays in any nation who oppose the patriarchy and they try to work with other nations to destroy the regime, but it just leads to momentary strife and conflict because the gays are badly outnumbered for obvious reasons :) So yeah the revolution will continue and America is very likely to get its ass kicked in the very near future.

In recent years, no, not really. He was an extremist when he was younger.

As for Khamenei, I suspect that like Nasrallah he was kinda caught up in the whole thing. Not a naturally aggressive man like his mentor, more kind and folksy, but beholden by his bloodline I think. The imams do not have disagreements... they are an existence unto themselves. The stronger personalities tend to take the lesser ones in thrall like a whirlwind. Khamenei himself was not a fan of the cultists... he's on record as mocking them. But he played the role because he had to. It was all a very delicate dance that worked until Trump and his financial ambitiousness came around. The ironic thing is that being killed by Trump makes him a legend, because nothing makes you a hero like dying in battle against the lord of darkness himself.
