I have a theory about social engineering and the 100-year cycles humanity seems to follow. The first half of every century is fucking terrible, followed by hunger struggle famine, which wipes away the knowledge and influence and cultural legacy of the previous generation (who by the end of the previous century were experiencing abundance and a surge in culture). If you look at the 20th century, you have a few generations coming out of the prosperity of the end of the previous century who try to carry their ideas into the next, only for catastrophies (WWI, influenza, great depression) wasting all previous prosperity as those who lived through prosperity run idle and are regarded as old and outdated while the latest cluster of new fads and technology seem to dispense of their old knowledge and experience base. Maybe a short time period of economic flourish (post-WWI to 1929), then a crushing crash that destroys all underpinnings of the world that previous gen tried to continue on, wasting the last of that generation's relevance in strife for ~15 years (1929-1941), then a giant war that obliterates all notions of the previous world's moral, social, and culture standards, then re-building the world (1945-1960) into a new paradigm and standard so disconnected and actively encouraged to dismiss antiquity the past is erased. Bonus points that the cultural artefacts of that previous culture (silent films, brittle 78 records, radio) vanish easily bc the tech became obsolete and lost, and anyone still around from the previous world disabused and finally dismissed as being an "old-timer" (think: 1959s grandparents talking about the 1890s to their grandchildren, their own children already angry and spiteful and dismissive of their parents). The cycle continues. We are currently in the Erasure and Historical Distancing cycle to erase the 20th century, right on track to dispose of that time forever in the next war.

But essentially OP is correct, the U.S. essentially got the spoils for winning the most devastating war in human history, and as a result there were several decades of relative prosperity. Maintaining that level of widespread prosperity is impossible after the rest of the world rebuilds and your country has to compete. In order to have several decades of widespread spoils of war, we'd have to fight (and win) another large-scale war, and nuclear weapons have made that a no-win situation. Your best option is to fight like hell in the current environment and do whatever is necessary to make it, because it's still possible to make it in the U.S., it just takes years of hard work and personal sacrifice.
