Because you misunderstand the reality of a global war for 90%+ of the population. The majority of men were not in the trenches. They were at home watching their pensions vanish and their standard of living become more expensive. The quality of their food decreased (with rationing in some cases) and access to decent health-care became harder. Information becomes unreliable and propagandised. It's not like the movies. Most men in the military will never see combat, yet alone civilians. It's really boring and economically depressing times for the average person.
