It's about a quarter shia and a quarter sunni, so the shia want to attack Israel with Iran and the sunnis want to sell out like the gulf states.The Christian quarter of the population don't care about either but are rapidly dwindling thanks to the same US policies that saw Christians wiped out in Iraq, Syria etc - they used to be majority 50 years ago.

By not retaliating against Israel, it paints Israel as the bad guys, offensively attacking a neutral nation for no apparent reason. Lebanon is smart enough to realise that the rest of the world will give them sympathy and aid after being attacked for no reason.
