>Numbeo Cost of Living Index 34 (2026), noticeably lower than Thailand (38) while higher than Vietnam (26) and Indonesia (26)
>Significantly cheaper than Singapore (87+) and Brunei (48+) — no contest there
>Modern 1-2 bedroom condos with pool/gym/security in KL/Penang often $400–800/month — comparable to or below good options in Bangkok/Phuket but with far better build quality and facilities
>World-class private healthcare at medical tourism prices — often 30-50% less than equivalent treatment in Thailand, with English-speaking doctors and JCI-accredited hospitals
>Extremely diverse & high-quality food scene — mamak, hawker, Indian, Chinese, Malay, Western options all cheap and excellent; street/food court meals frequently $2–5 with better hygiene standards than most SEA peers
>Very high local purchasing power index (80) compared to Thailand (45), Vietnam (42), Indonesia (29) — your foreign income stretches further relative to local costs
>Reliable high-speed internet, stable electricity, clean tap water in cities (rare in region), modern malls, public transport (MRT/LRT in KL, ferries, etc.)
>English widely spoken in business/urban areas — much easier daily life than Vietnam/Indonesia/Thailand outside tourist zones
>Stable, low-crime environment with decent rule of law — consistently ranks safer/more predictable than Philippines, Indonesia, parts of Thailand
>Multicultural society without heavy tourist overcrowding in most places (outside Penang/Langkawi hotspots)
>Easy access to both city life (KL) and nature/beaches/islands without extreme tourist inflation seen in Bali/Phuket
>Overall "first-world amenities at third-world prices" feel — closest thing in SEA to comfortable Western lifestyle without Singapore-level costs

Or you can live happily together with your wife and kids in Malaysia for half the price of the west.

You are emphasizing how cheap it is, so does that mean Malaysia is a compromise? If you were a millionaire would you still move there?

I dunno anon, I've lived here all my life. I think I'm too invested in this country to abandon it and go live in tee-pees with a gook wife and her insect family

Genuinely have no idea what my options are, the idea that I can just get up and go makes no sense to me. I don't know how people do that. Sounds neat in theory but I don't know.

There are tons of rich guys living in Malaysia on long term visas for mainly tax evasion purposes. Quite frankly like Dubai of SEA.
