The book is fairly different and would be perceived as propaganda for many reasons. In the book, Heathcliff is a Gypsy, which many here I'm sure would love to disapprove of. For the purposes of this post however I'll expound upon the story to you and explain why others perceive it differently.The appeal of the book may seem different to you if you cease to identify with Edgar Linton (nice, rich husband) and instead identify with Heathcliff (the 'toxic' guy by your estimation). Edgar was a plain, boring, spoilt man by all accounts, whereas Heathcliff was a poor, illiterate boy adopted by a shitty dad who just wanted a pet farm-hand whom he could tout as proof of his charitable nature. Heathcliff worked hard his whole life and endured all manner of humiliation/abuse. He was the childhood sweetheart of Catherine - they loved one another very dearly, throughout the years. Heathcliff regularly doted on Catherine and did anything and everything for her. They were best friends, but frequently kept apart.Catherine's nature, which is histrionic, manipulative, impulsive and emotional, with a blind adherence towards the whims of others/society and her desire to be spiteful, is directly criticised in the book and is indeed seen as the cause of the entire story. If she hadn't been ashamed to love Heathcliff, she wouldn't have gone with Edgar - she only married him for his money/status. If anything, you should be disapproving of the marriage, because Heathcliff is a true man (works hard, suffers, is hated by society, tries to do well by the people he loves) and Edgar is a spoilt rich guy. Heathcliff's ultimate weakness is the woman he loves - also relatable.Heathcliff, upon running away, becomes his own man (it's hinted that he joined the army/navy, then built up a fortune). He's self-made, hard-working and adventurous - but he's also devoted to one woman and one woman only, he refuses to love the woman he's forced to marry and instead prefers his childhood love.
I should add that I'm reading the book currently (I was likewise roped into watching it too) and am enjoying it far more than the movie. The movie is mindless smut designed to hoodwink morons. The book is bereft of all such erotica and instead focuses on the emotional torment which the characters inflict upon one another - it literally takes place over generations.You more or less pity everyone involved, and it's less a romance to gush over and more a tragedy in which every character suffers for years on end due to spite, gossip, vengefulness and unfulfilled love. It serves as a warning against many things - carrying grudges (Heathcliff direly pursuing revenge but being unhappy regardless), girlish impulsivity (Catherine stoking hostilities between Edgar/Heathcliff) and a failure to move on and get on with life, which can be said for everyone involved. It also captures the essence of social claustrophobia well. The most nonsensical drama takes place in small towns/tiny settings with only a limited pool of humans, which is exactly what happens in the story.
