Why do Americans insist on saying eye-ran and eye-raq, yet they can say Italy?
>>
>>530307578
it's copying how Southerners in US speak which they associate with military who use diphongs (two vowels in one) in their vowels, especially to emphasise the rhotic r. Iran and Iraq start with vowels followed by an r but i can't take a diphong so they change it to ai, airaq airan. Italy is a vowel followed by a consonant that isn't a rhotic r but the t changes to a d so it's easier to pronounce it as i, eedaly

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.

Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.

Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation's OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.

this difference in pronunciation is called 'lenition' (softening consonants based on what vowels are before or after it) and 'fortition' (hardening consonants). it's actually a feature of Celtic languages and isn't usually written in English so you get lots of different accents.

I say eye+tally

I do not like korea
I am not a fan of k pop music

I do not understand why korea is so gay

The fuck is wrong with the English language?
>>
>>530310637
there are rules, but the rules are so complicated and esoteric it looks like there are none since nobody can explain them
>>
Pronouncing the "T" sound as an "R" sounds the dumbest

So I use the British pronunciation
>>
>>530307578
They used to say eye-talian. Some still do depending on the accent
>>
>>530307578
>>
I say Iran properly, but I do say "Eye-rack". I have no idea why.
>>530308295
My mammaw said Italy as "It-lee".
>>
>>530308295
fpbp and explains the way larpers like Condolezza pronounce allies (al-áyys)
>>
>>530310854
they can say ai-italian because it ends with a diphthong sound (ian). italy doesn't
>>
>>530307578
english is a weird language with arbitrary pronunciations, see
ear
bear
beard
heard
fear
>>
>>530310578
Then don't say them. Better if you don't say anything.
>>
>>530307578
I've always been saying eyetaly
>>
>>530310933
because Iran ends is a soft nasal consonant n close to pronuncing r and Iraq ends in a hard consonant q/k from the back of the throat (uvular) so harder to go from r to k than r to n and Southern US english is all about slurring and sounding effortless
>>
>>530310761
If no one can explain them, then it's impossible to say if there are rules. But joking aside, I know the rules. I have the unfortunate privilege of being married to a polyglottal, and she drones on and on and on about various rules for different languages.
>>
Don't forget Eye-talians.

Their names are the best, as children we used to enjoy laughing at the credits after American TV programmes.

>>530310933
Iraq is basically impossible for an english speaker to pronounce correctly anyway. It's basically a weird semitic croak that actually starts with a consonant.

You seem like a language guru. Why do some people say "Warshington" instead of "Washington"? Old English had a lot more R's all over the place and I thought it might be some leftover from that?

Can Americans even understand each other? It seems like they try to soften every single pronunciation.

water >> warrarr
City > si-dee

>>530312207
it's not an r, it's a long a vowel, we spell long vowels with a r in English. this long vowel in 3 syllable place names (Varncouver, Florida, Teexas) also seems to be a feature of American English related to the use of diphthongs (which are basically a form of long vowel).

No, it does not. It starts with this bizarre letter:

Not true.
In the south, we still call them
>EYE-talians
>>
>>530312791
Texas is 2 syllables and it opening vowel is a diphthong (Tayxas), then Mexico which is 3 syllables the opening vowel becomes a long e or a diphthong too (Mayxico) depending on the speaker. That is probably where it comes from.
>>530314195
because you decided to write it how it is pronounced, but then some Brits started to pronounce the r too so that stays spelt like that.
>>
>>530310791
This!!!

>>530307578
Is this only true for Americans, or is it the same for Canadians, Australians, etc?

because the brits were raped by romans so their vocals have both anglogermanic-grecolatin pronunciation. it's dumb but you're dumber, I mean you're a fucking gook
>>
>>530312780
You don't turn a t sound into an r sound. You turn it into a d sound. Wahdder. Parrdy.
>>
>>530316052
the r is trilled/rolled in most languages so it sounds like a d, English is unique in that it doesn't have a rolled r but only a rhotic one other than in some dialects
>>
>>530307578
Same reason why they say "NOOKEELAR weapons"
