In the scottish clans case, it formed post-christianity, so it does mean sons of Adam though, its not an old gaelic name.Jews were less likely to take biblical surnames because they wanted to blend in among non-jews, so they named themselves after cities and names that demonstrated their high worth (Gold Mountain, Silver Boulder).
