It sounds like VR might be what you're looking for though, the latest generation of HMDs have achieved near retina level resolution, and much wider field of view. It's pricey for the good stuff though, like $1k-$2k for the headset, and then at least $3k to $5k for a computer that can run everything really well (you need to be able to hit at least 45 FPS for it to be enjoyable).
