We have Assembly every year thoughbeit?

I never got to experience that either. I was out being a cool guy with my cool friends at cool parties. By the time I was old enough to settle down, lan parties were well on their way out.
>>

It's best they don't. The smell was atrocious.

>>
>>531168105
That was the last of the good times before vidya got cool and the wombs wandered in. Then it was nonstop racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and need for diversity and inclusion. Back then guys wanted there to be more *gamer girls", for selfish reasons but it wasn't cool so none came. That truly had no idea, no one could really.

I'm a zoomer and I managed to join a literal "anime" club in school where there were a mix of queer theater tumblerinas and the other kids that would go on the computer to play stuff to download for local Counter Strike 1.6, 3D Dragon Ball fights, and Minecraft. This was only 10 years ago btw.

Actually we still have LAN parties and they're all ages 14+ (with parental permission) including zoomers.
>>
>>531167653
The best part of the LAN party was the 4AM game of 8v8 Halo:CE - via LAN of course - in the side room where people would start dropping dead into sleep with the controller in their hands as the game slowly became 4v4 then 2v2 then 1v1

Went to the Gathering at Vikingskipet, Hamar in Norway a couple of times back in the early 2000s. It was pretty cool, but dragging around those big CRTs sucked ass. Back then high speed internet was still in its infancy so it was a pretty big deal for many and perhaps the only opportunity for an entire year to pirate as much crap as possible. Meeting other sweaty Quake players in person and people you only knew from IRC etc. Certainly quite a strange time in history. It got smelly as time progressed though, the showers I remember were quite empty.
>>
>>531167746
Boring
>>
>>531168901
Also great even if it's not a larger event, obviously.

As an adult it's easier if you can bring your kids to an existing event like this for a WE tho and meet your old buddy there or something like that. Good if the events keep going.

>dragging around those big CRTs sucked ass
Most that weren't young and fit enough to use a load carrier rack backpack thing just used handcarts and trolleys tho. Some came with the CRT loaded in a car and poorly prepared to move stuff around on site but obviously there tended to be quite a few already unloaded handcarts and trolleys on site anyhow, people helped. Wasn't usually that tough.

I swear this is one of my biggest issues with FPS games these days. It is such a faggy experience. Back in the good old days it was all about speed and powerful weaponry. Jump, strafe, know the power-ups, show no mercy to your opponents, spam the entryways and narrow passages with rockets, make them feel absolutely worthless and don't care if they are absolutely smothered. Get good or stop playing type environment, accept your standing or GTFO.
Back in 2016 I was quite excited for the new Doom game and played it a lot in multiplayer as it released and it brought back memories from when I was a teenager, it actually replicated that feeling, but what happened? People on reddit, new age gamers complained that the "weapons were too OP" and as a result the developers nerfed everything and then it regressed into what jokingly were referred to as a Nerf Arena blast shooter.. incidentally I checked out that game recently and even that joke of a game made for kids seem less forgiving that what is paraded under the FPS multiplayer umbrella these days. Another thing is how Bethesda owning the rights to several of the old franchises have decided that one game should not "compete" with another product in their lineup making it so they have only gay game modes and not classic modes. Today everybody is supposed to feel like a winner so that means more random chance and dragged out awkward gun-play. Once they nerfed everything to appease zoomers on reddit the hardcore fanbase left as well.
>>
>>531167653
I went to Quakecon 2005 to play RTCW:ET on LAN but even by then it was a dying thing, huge LAN parties. But it was cool and a good experience.
>>
>>531167653
the internet is as fast as the LAN was back then.
>>
>>531169732
This is one of the many reasons why I pirate games and never play online with random people, only people I know via Hamachi
I played Morrowind multiplayer a few years ago, it was great

quakecon is fucking massive now
>>
>>531169480
You probably don't mean that but massed CRTs tended to have a whiff of ozone or something and the machines back when also tended to have more of a smell of flux and oil or w/e it was.

>>531169732
I remember. There were always some people playing so well that around 4-10ms latency difference started to make the entire game completely one-sided already. Some games actually only really worked without random stuff happening AT LAN parties for them and their equally skilled opponents.

> Once they nerfed everything to appease zoomers on reddit the hardcore fanbase left as well.
I'd say broadest possible commercial appeal, not zoomers only.
>>
>>531167653
this shit looks so fucking gay
>>
>>531168831
i honestly don't get the appeal of video games. they're boring and have no translation into real life. it's literally a complete waste of time. you learn literally nothing and just fry your brain

Based. Now I can lie in bed instead of sit in a chair like it's a job.
>>
>>531170532
It’s the same thing. The ones cosplaying as geeks just enable things. Back then, being in front of a PC all day was considered something losers did unless they were making money. Today, a whore is in front of a computer. An influencer is in front of a computer. It’s normalizing being a dork which is unhealthy.

Look at the people who are unemployed versus the employed. Unless they’re a criminal with a drug problem, chances are they’re a geek with bad health and social issues.

Geeks and nerds sit and think all day. Men apply their thoughts into action.
>>
lan is pretty popular in EU still and dreamhack exists in the US lil nigga
there's a few lan/internet cafe style places in many big cities around the US though they're mostly for local esports teams
>>
>>531170442
> honestly don't get the appeal of video games
Maybe you're more the type that gets the appeal of watching other people do ball sports? I don't get them. But either have been happening since times immemorial. Playing reaction or strategy games etc., or watching people play them.

> have no translation into real life
That part is wrong, various bits translate into real life including less pleasant ones, e.g. vehicle operators including contemporary drone pilots in wars.

I don't really feel like selling you on video games (you do you) but the interaction with the real world is indirectly and somewhat directly pretty huge. Also various pieces of direct geopolitics tied to this, for example it was very directly one thing where the Chinese govt decided to do a 180. Video game ban became video game production policy with the world's largest video game market. There are effects.

Truly some of my best memories.

Exchanging porn at lan parties.

They train hand-eye coordination. It was found that surgeons who played video games had fewer errors in surgery than their non gaming counter parts.
>>
>>531167653
those monitors were fucking heavy
>>
>>531167653
They had one of those LAN gaming places by my mall growing up. You could just walk in and we'd go in just to look at and laugh at the nerds. There were guys that looked just like the WoW guy on South Park. They would just be glued to thise computers and not even notice we were laughing at them.
>>
>>531171455
me too

>>531171442
>Maybe you're more the type that gets the appeal of watching other people do ball sports
No. I like to debate and think a lot. This is why I come to pol. To have conversations/debates on various topics. I don't watch sports or play video games or anything of the sort for the most part. Except for flight simulator. But only because it's realistic. I don't fly crazy stuff in flight simulator. I only do ordinary common types of commercial flights. Paris - Madrid in an A350. Dubai - Doha in a B787. Istanbul - Baku in an A320. London - NYC in a Concorde (this was once realistic, OK..).

But yeah for the most part sports and video games that can't be translated into real life (like zombies and aliens and shit) are really boring to me.

>>531167653
I remember renting vcr suitcases and putting a deposit on the tapes you had to wait until a year after the movie theaters stopped showing a movie in order to get one to rent.
Computers were basically a tv with a Tomy tape drive computer.
