honestly, what's the point of spending $1 trillion on the military, if Iran, who spends $10 billion on its military and only has cheap shahed drones and missiles, can just close the Strait of Hormuz like that? Drones have rendered navies obsolete, it seems.

Iran threatened to close the strait in 1987, and the US destroyed Iran's navy in one day (Operation Praying Mantis) and escorted tankers to ensure safe passage. But now Iran has tens of thousands of drones and short range missiles. And the US navy is powerless.

How is the US supposed to fight China then?

They're still useful to extend your operational range. Iran is fighting in its own back yard, the US is stretched half way across the globe.

The US can't win a conventional war against China on the Chinese side of the Pacific. Even the Korean war, against a much much weaker China, was at best a draw.
American forces in places like South Korea and Taiwan aren't expected to actually win, just to be able to inflict enough casualties that a Chinese conquest of those areas wouldn't be worth it.
