We had semi-permanent missile defenses in all the US bases, but they are stationary. You don't land 800,000 troops, hundreds of tanks, support, comms and roll straight up the mountain. You need a landing base that has missile defense. You then move to the next temporary base that has missile defense. You are talking about 5 years to inch up that mountain while you get pounded daily.
