>>531186961your premise is incorrect. the USA defends taiwan because japan surrendered taiwan to the allies and the USA put the Republic of China in charge of administering the islands. it has been a US vassal state since the japanese surrender in 1945, same as Japan and the republic of korea. the chips are there because when chip tech was taking off, taiwan had the land and resources (water) needed for the chip plants and it became a hub of engineer training. it goes back decades, not just the 10 years that Chips have been a mainstream topic of political discussion. chips are a taiwanese product because the taiwanese government went all in on the gamble they could be a major player and passed the laws needed to allow it. it is really nothing to do with US offshoring or outsourcing. the fab plants would not be viable in many US states and would have been further restricted by environmental policies in the 90s.
