Engaging the marines with troops, jets, artillery and tanks exposes them to be destroyed by the US navy and air force, and of course by the marines themselves. If they can manage high attrition for the Iranian army, coupled with low morale and perhaps some insurgencies, maybe Iran will agree to terms, gets regime changed by the military or has to focus on a major insurgency.
