When the USA had cable internet everywhere, we had nearly none. Cable rollout was controlled by Rupert Murdoch who owned the most popular cable TV in Australia called Foxtel. When Kevin Rudd wanted to give cable to everyone (nationalise it), Rupert Murdoch came after him. Another thing Kevin Rudd tried to do was increase the tax on miners, and those mining giants came after him too. Both parties attacked Kevin Rudd on every MSM, news paper, etc until eventually they had him backstabbed and pushed out of leadership. In the end we got a limited cable internet role out, no mining tax. The things you can change here in Australian politics are restricted, you are far more vulnerable to being overthrown by special interests if you suggest anything to help 'the people'. So likely, Obama would have been dethroned before he could've made a name for himself.
