>why are used cars so expensive these days>The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), colloquially known as "cash for clunkers", was a $3 billion U.S. federal scrappage program intended to provide economic incentives to U.S. residents to purchase a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle when trading in a less fuel-efficient vehicle. The program was promoted as a post-recession stimulus program to boost auto sales (which had declined due to the 2008 financial crisis, the Great Recession, and the 2008–2010 automotive industry crisis) while putting more fuel-efficient vehicles on the roadways.>The program outlined a procedure to ensure that vehicles traded-in under "cash for clunkers" will not be resold by dealers by destructively disabling the engine (and thus also precluding the possibility that any mechanical engine components might be salvaged to be used in the repair of any other vehicles): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_Allowance_Rebate_System#Engine_disablement_and_scrappage_criteriayes they were all destroyed>"I don't live in the US, chuddy!"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrappage_programAustria,Canada,China,France,Germany,Italy,Ireland,India,Japan,Luxembourg,The Netherlands,Norway,Portugal,Romania,Russia,Slovakia,Spain,United Kingdom,United States....>what did all these old cars that vanished from the used car market have in common?they didn't have GPS built in to track you
not gonna matter soonpeak oil donny ended petroleum as a non luxury good
Cash for clunkers was a failure, just like op. GPS is cars is passive, you should be more worried about cellular modems in you car, which weren't common until 2015. Nice schizo retard slide thread, bots make higher quality threads than this shit.
>>531266154People have no idea how this fucked the car market in America. In the late 90s/early 2000s I received no less than 2 free cars from people and bought used cars for between $100 to $1000.
This program is almost 20 years old by now. Used cars were piss cheap until 2020. Your math doesn't add up.
>>531266154Some people invested on real state and wanted the price to go up so they could sell and make profitSome people bought a car...
>>531266154>german flag>talking about cash for clunkersleast obvious bot thread, i suppose.
>>531267093I bought a 1999 shitbox in 2016 for €1200, it died on me last year.If I want to buy a 2009 (same age) shitbox to replace it with this would cost me well over €3000. If I want to buy the exact same 1999 car it would cost me about €1500 for something that is now completely outdated and run through.
>>531267211what does have my flag to do with this topic60% of this board is American, of course I'll focus on the US equivalent in the OP for maximum attention and not the Abwrackprämie we had
>>531267166You are retarded and don't even realize.Think before posting, retard.A plain retard is bad enough, but a retard who thinks he is smart is the ultimate stupidity.
>>5312661542008 was nearly 20 years ago. That program isn't why there aren't cheap used cars anymore.
>>531267669People have nothing else than their home and their car and they want every penny they can get from themProtip sell high to an illegal inmigrant
>>531267486You are a dumb fuck. In 2005 I was able to buy a reasonably cheap 1997 vehicle. I didn't have to buy a 25 year old car. Cars themselves have become more expensive due to safety regulations, new technology integration, and inflation. This has impacted the used market tremendously. No doubt cash for clunkers had some level of impact even to this day, but it is no longer the primary driver of the used market and hasn't been for a long time.
>>531266154I hope one day the people responsible will be punished. They should all be executed by having sulfuric acid injected into their veins.
>>531267788it wasnt just about safety, they tricked normies that they were also dirtier, that polluted more or used more oil... but really because computers weren't advanced enough to figure out how to engineer a car with planned obsolescence and a lot of older cars were simply too overbuilt
>>531266154I'll find whoever destroyed that baby GMC and avenge it. Motherfucking faggot ass niggers.
>>531266154>why are used cars so expensive these daysIt's not. It is because you are an europoor
just imagine that after the 60's and 70's that car buyers worried more about crash safety but weren't going to risk their lives with a smaller asian car that was good on gas, then in the 90's they figured out how to make the cars safer for the standards then but it made the cars overbuilt by modern standards where they'll keep running as long as they're maintained since they also had to figure out how to make engines that wouldnt start fires during a crash... once the computers caught up they realized they needed to get those cars off the road to trap buyers into a cycle of planned obsolescense
>>531266154https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_Allowance_Rebate_System>The program officially started on July 1, 2009, the processing of claims began July 24,[2] and the program ended on August 24, 2009, as the appropriated funds were exhausted, having scrapped 677,081 vehicles>677,081 vehiclesHow many new cars are sold in the US each year?https://www.consumershield.com/articles/how-many-cars-sold-each-year>15MLooks like pushing the blame on Cash for Clunkers is a psyop easily dismissed by anyone with an IQ over nigger.
>>531267636There was a variety of programs kneecaping America over the years to weaken us relative to the 2nd world. These were sold under the focus of environmental and profitability overtly but covertly were pushed by chinese agents in office and leadership positions. Cash for clunkers is one of them, fuel economy standards were another. It forced vehicle prices up and complicated manufacturing and supply chains. Some industries were push overseas due to this, others ballooned in price. Power got more expensive as a result of shutting down coal mines, failing to advance nuclear while focusing solely on green energy that could not compete in any meaningful way. This is in part why the American empire is accelerating in its collapse and doesn't even have the raw inputs to fix it. If you want a competitive nation you keep power and energy, vehicles, heavy equipment, food, and commodities at low prices so you can build and move things.
>>531267166It was a massive one time shock that the market never really recovered from. Prices may have gone up regardless but CFC did have a role. I think a big part is that used cars get exported a lot now too, and cars that people want now, like old trucks and SUVs, saw disproportionate scrapping under CFC.
>>531266154And boomers will tell you they didn't sell out their children's futures
>>531267923>>531268118The jews were proud of their program. Also, the reason they know the exact number (677,081) is because a title transfer was done for each vehicle. You could probably FOIA the list of VINs.
>>531267944Its not a case of economics. These scrappage programmes were crime so severe that no words exist to properly describe it. Those responsible deserve the worst possible death imaginable.
>>531268028look at velour that used to be commonplace, they wanted people to buy a car that was comfortable, that way grandma would hand it down to one of their grandkids, compare that to today where cars are throwaway

american cars went from big heaps of stylish shit with vinyl or leather, to the comfy cars of the 80s and 90s with velour, they wanted to regain buyers trust that their cars werent unreliable junk too
>>531266154Cars are not getting more expensive retard, the dollar is getting weaker relative to the metals this shit boxes have, in 2010 the catalytic converter of a Prius could cost upwards of 3 thousand dollars alone, they had to make laws exclusively for this reason
Modern cars are too expensive to maintain after a given point. It's not economically feasible to keep anything over 2010 running forever, while you can pull this off with a 90s car with a few yards of wire.
the reason why used cars are more expensive is because there is fewer and fewer new cars sold every year.
>>531268546The 2010 to 2020 models are all planned obsolescence and scam trash with exception of a few models mostly Japanese.I would avoid buying pretty much anything from this era specially anything made in America, you can get away with some European shit but if you want to keep them running you have do extensive maintenance and tune ups to them
>>531266154>>531266687>>531267166I am 100% positive cash for clunkers didn't actually destroy the car, Jews don't work like that. They probably shipped all the cars to Africa and made a couple free billion$ and some Jew got rich and fat

>>531268662because whoever buys new cars now always has an uppity attitude that everyone that didnt buy the fully loaded most blingy looking trim, even buyers of toyotas now want the blingy top trim not just a toyota that's a reliable appliance since that's just not good enough that it holds value... because they're all jews that destroyed the middle class
>>531268655>it's da computaz!!!!trucks have higher profit margins than crossovers, SUVs, sedans, etc. because manufacturers know truck owners are paypigs. this isn't an insane /pol/ conspiracy, it's the truth. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/12/its-a-war-detroit-automakers-battle-wildly-profitable-truck-market.html>no, you don't understand. i NEED a truck because...yeah, the manufacturers understand this, too. you "need" a truck so you'll pay an inflated price.
>>531268755they feel more expensive because you (we, collectively) are being assraped in other areas of life. rents/housing take up a larger share of income, insurance (home, automotive, etc.) products take up a larger share of income, etc.
>>531268741toyota <100k miles
>>531268823Pretty much, 3 thousand dollars for a used car has always been the strand and I have not seen that price gone up. One of the reasons I don't flip cars anymore is because of that, everyone is trying to sell their blown engine shit box for a thousand bucks, you still got to put another thousand bucks on the engine, do the job yourself and they'll still try to haggle the price down to 25 hundred from you. Go fuck yourselves broke fucks, change the engine yourself
>>531268910>I'm not having this retarded argument with you about how vehicles need computers and Obamas gay laws that made everything a bloated egg are totally fine. I buy cars for <$3000 and drive them until I can't. I talked to a 60 year old salesman at CarMax - he does the exact same (2007 Mazda 3). But he sells college girls a 2023 Jetta and sells customer service guys a 2024 King Cab because they're stupid baby brains about vehicles. It's actually very curious. >>531266154It said the program received 690k cars, is that really that big of a deal in terms of nation wide used vehicles? The really evil part is making it illegal to sell any parts from the vehicles and engines and purposely destroying the engines in tortures tests. Considering millions of new vehicles are sold every year, is 690k vehicles of various makes and models and years really that devastating to the used car market?

>>531276694My first car was an 01 solara I got for 600 bucks in 2007. Very low mileage it ran until my meth head former brother in law stole it. Likely would have run into the 20s but it was a bit of a gas hog. Hard to keep running as a broke high schooler but it got me to classLater got an 04 scion xb for like 1100ish. Manual transmission was a super fun little car. Lost in a flood. Replaced with a 96 civic hatchback. I would get people knocking on my door looking to buy that lol. If/when my current car dies im absolutely FUCKED
>>531276694>2011 civicgreat car, basically indestructible. The shitty automatic transmissions that have become nearly ubiquitous are the weak point in nearly all modern vehicles. Manual transmissions were basically indestructible unless abused; and were smaller, lighter, and far more serviceable. Clutches are also relatively cheap and decent drivers could get 100k out of them anyways. Many of you probably have no idea what's been lost in that regard.
>>531276438>690k cars, is that really that big of a dealYes. Prices are set on the margin. Feds placed a call option; set the floor. That's why you get all the gaslighting boomer shills in these threads saying learn to weld build a car
>>531276950>Hard to keep running as a broke high schoolerWhy? Those cars were so easy to work on it's not even funny compared to todays 3/4 plastic shit. You can disassemble and entire Japanese car with a 10/12/14/17mm socket/wrench and a screwdriver. Junkyard parts and Walmart existed then. We changed transmissions after school and on weekends. Your high school probably also had an auto shop back then.
>>531277050>picrel
>>531267669it most certainly is. There is a delay between the introduction of those new SHIT modern vehicles and the inevitable shitification of them at about 50-100k miles with their irreparable nature becoming totally obvious. Now you're on the treadmill and you will need a new car every 50-75k miles. No more 300k vehicles.
>a (relatively) minor program that ended 18 years ago is the reason why the used car market is still shitBrainlet take
>>531277570Hey boomie, I can also fix cars and stick weld and make things. It doesn't change the economics. The greatest cost is premises. Fixing old cars can be fun and good for the soul but it isn't cheaper. The cheapest car I have ever owned is the Hilux I bought new.
>>531277784>their irreparable nature They're all still repairable ... and it's never made more sense than today.Even if a vehicle needs a replacement engine and/or transmission ... what else are you going to get for ~5k that's any better? Bonus points if you rebuild the replacement engine/transmission first and otherwise took care of your vehicle. Then it's essentially a new car all over again ... for what comparatively amounts to a song.
>>531276804I using this stuff. I have more than enough for any vehicle I want but my wife likes role-playing great depression. I just built a new pc after 17 years. Feels Feelsbadman. I think I'm going to buy a base 25 Grand Cherokee for 30k new.

What fantasy are you living in?Have you been to a dealership recently?Just FYI, cars do not require screens to serve their main purpose.
>>531278020>Hey boomieif you could actually do any of these things, the shit you said following it wouldn't have been said. Because just like how I'm ... still not a boomer ...you've never done any of these things. Holding someone else's stick welder and making a line does not you a welder make.
>>531278074The problem is the market seems hell bent on pricing a vehicle with a dead engine or transmission to be equal to a car where nothing has blown up yet once the shit is swapped.Even if you buy a car for 2k and swap an engine to it, you still end up paying 5k-7k un total which is extremely close to a vehicle what hasn't blow.God help you if you end up with a vehicle that's particularly problematic and even a junkyard engine/transmission is extremely expensive.

>>531279785That's with new tires, new brake pads new exhaust system etc. If you get 10 years out of that it's much cheaper than renting a garage to work in and buying tools. I'm not costing in time because I support you in getting zoomies to learn skills. I don't want them being gaslit that we couldn't but Honda civics for $500 from a friend in the 90s
>>531266154It was a shitty program. The epitome of Keynesian broken windows economic stimulus. But it was not the most significant factor for the current state of the auto industry.Regulation, both around saftey and emissions, and inflation are the two main culprits. One stat I find really fascinating is how US new car sales only have a very minor long term upwards trend over the last 50 years. US population has grown by over 60% since the mid 70s, and yet new car sales have barely risen at all. In the 70s you would be considered strange for driving a car more than 5 years old. Kinda like seeing someone use a 5+ year old phone today. The person is either poor, a teenager or really old, or they are just committed to a frugal lifestyle and impervious to social judgement. And since no one really wanted older or used cars, if you were poor you could pick them up real cheap. Anyway I wonder if this trend will continue and what it would mean for the car market if the US population reached 500 million but new cars sales still averaged under 20 million a year.
>>531274815i agree with you but we learned how to work on cars from our dads and car forums, not school. i know it sucks most zoomers don't have a father figure around to teach that stuff but there's some really good youtube channels that teach this stuff. like for instance chrisfix's channel has everything you'd need to know for simple maintanence and the videos are made with a zoomer who might have to work on his car in a parking lot without a garage in mind. for questions that go beyond surface level you have car forums. on some of the more popular makes/models of car everything you could ever imagine doing to the car has been done before and someone's made a writeup on it.and for "i know how to work on cars now, how do i do X" you have the shop manual. pro tip bentley makes a lot of manuals for random ass non bentley non luxury cars. if they make a manual for your car its way better than the haynes or chilton. also you can find basically every car manual ever online or at your library.
>>531281950Are you still allowed to drain your oil in the AutoZone parking lot? Do they still have loner tools?
>>531282299i do business park parking lots on the weekend
>>531278020i didn't know rare flags were gay flags.>Economics what if that all just stopped. what then?
>>531269562Yeah my 2008 diesel touran ran for 230k+ km without a single engine issue before I sold it while my 2015 diesel CX-5 needed lots of repairs and a full engine replacement before even reaching 150k.
>>531266154For me? It’s the Saturn SL(gen 1) rip Saturn, fuck gmc kikes for killing them.
>>531282450Because premises are unaffordable many mechanics have gone mobile. I find the easiest is to buy the oil and filter and have a nigger at the side of the road change it for five bucks. Sparkplugs I get iridium at the dealership and let a nigger in the line change them. Only one thing at a time under my supervision. That way I don't have to drive around with tools and get oily
>>531266154Wanna know the worst part? The programme was so rich that people exported second-hand cars from my country to the US to turn it in for a profit. It's a similar scheme to how they're exporting ex-lease EVs to be scrapped for a profit in another country. Were money no object, evil people wouldn't be in charge.I fucking hate this gay earth. All those nice old bangers that got destroyed for a fuckless page of fake gay nigger paper.
>>531282673>what if that all just stopped. what then?Welcome to my world; see comment above about supervising niggers. It helps that I did all this shit when I was young and know how to recognize competence; I never let the dealership touch my car even under warranty
>>531267232Never forget to halve today's price to get a decent 2019 approximation.Covflation must be kept in mind.
>>531266154Jfc cash for clunkers was 20 years ago. Give it a break. Used cars are expensive because they are built well and last longer these days
>>531266154why is achmed posting about usa
so many cia and fbi agents in this threadthey're rattled
>>531282981I didn't realize how diverse the US auto industry was until two decades of CUV and Trucks. It almost feels like a myth that the US ever manufactured coupes.
>>531273947You can still find deals if you have a bit of patience. I bought a Compass for 3300 a few months ago with only 140k. And that's in southern california. The key is youve gotta find someone who is looking to upgrade and has plenty of money. Theyre usually willing to settle for less just to get the old car out of their driveway.
>>531268751this probably also happened but dealerships had to have proof of them destroying the engines.dealership i worked at had to record a video of us putting in the death juice and running it til it stopped forever. a lot of the guys working there bought the car from the seller over the c4c price and our manager looked the other way. i got a few cherokees out of it and 3/4 of them still run fine. the 4th one became a parts car for the other 3. this is a million times more "eco friendly" than buying evs made from chinese lithium mines and factories.
>>531266154>CARSFord Explorer Holocaust
>>531284140I've always wanted to get an old cherokee and turn it into an offroad vehicle. Never had enough disposable income to justify it though. When I still had a wrangler I had to use it for a dd so I didnt want to abuse it on trails very often.
>>531266154They were also higher quality than new cars today. Everything is cheap plastic. Everything is luxury on the surface and shit underneath.
>>531283833>Used cars are expensive because they are built well and last longer these daysAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHHAHAH
>>531266154People can't afford new cars anymore
>>531284561>They were also higher quality than new cars today. Eh not really. The Japanese stuff was pretty good but it mostly still is today. U.S. manufacturers were good until about the mid 70's and then took a huge nosedive in quality in the 80's. Late 90's and early 00's U.S. brands were some of the biggest pieces of shit ever made. They upped their quality pretty significantly after the bankruptcies and bailouts.
>>531280793>>531284948>New car sales.jpgYour graphs are not the same. It does show that taking 700k "clunkers" out of the market was huge when only 3m new cars were entering the market. Given that cars prang and assplode and wear out; that's a lot of cars to burn
>>531278128toyota is for cucks
>>531283551i really don't like other people touching the inside of my cars, i can do anything above the headgasket with one hand tied blindfolded except like more intense body work, frame work and paint. its definitely an irrational fear, i live right next to kd automotive the literal authority on 80s bmw's in north america and i even have a hard time giving them the keys.
>>531284956nah old cars were objectively better its not a rose tinted glasses thing. the na miata was the last car ever made where the ability and ease of the owner to work on the car was a design consideration. maybe the subaru forester/outback if you want to push the timeline out as far as possible. then we had a period of time where cars were hit or miss in those regards, some easy to work on but usually because of mere coincidence. and since around 2012-2015 planned obsolescence became a major design consideration. cars are now engineered to break and be hard to work on. now they're using electronics that require dealer lockout codes to make them impossible to be serviced by the owner, or even independent mechanics.in econ and in the tech industry this is known as crippleware https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crippleware
because of leftists policiesevery problem on earth can be traced back to a leftist decisiontaxation, lack of morality, carbon tax, housing, inflationliterally everythingyes jews are leftists
>>531284956go on any boomer car channel like uncle tony's garage, car wizard etc and you will see plenty of examples of ridiculous planned obsolescence. never heard of a 90s car requiring a $2200 computer to be replaced, and stopping your car from running every time the headlight goes out but i think that was a recent upload on car wizard lol. and keep in mind we're talking about some $30,000 family hauler crossover not an exotic italian sports car. i think it was the cr-v or some shit.
>>531286592>never heard of a 90s car requiring a $2200 computerThey did blow trannies. Loved my '76 bmw 2002, but it did need a head job and the body rusted out and all that points and condenser and plugs stuff - good riddance. 2010 petrol Hilux was sweet spot of electronics, injection, no tuning and no confused millennial with a laptop trying to diagnose
>>531266154>they didn't have GPS built in to track youNow you're getting it jimmy.
I promise you it's not cash for clunkers.>1% of in service for each model destroyed>Tons of illegals everywhere driving up demand>All cars post 2016 are shit>COVID years paused new car production>Plenty of NGOs buying up shit cars and sending them to Africa and etc
>>531266154Cash for clunkers destroyed 677,081 cars in 2009. That's simply not enough to make the dent in the used car market this many years later. The problem is a combination of low trust society with a lack of goodwill and empathy for your fellow countrymen and living life with the "dog eat dog world" or "buyer beware" selfish mentality, cost of living skyrocketing, the population numbers rapidly increasing in a short amount of time, and the newer the cars get the more expensive they were new thus the more expensive they will be used.
>>531287690Back in the 90s we had handlers. I miss the humint
>>531284140People who would use the term 'eco friendly' are the same retards who are quick to call someone's plausible hypothesis unscientific. They can't into math.
