It's something that pisses me off. In virtually all of America, car insurance in mandatory and if you don't pay it you could go to jail. It disproportionally harms the poor. The poor are drving beaters that are a few thousand dollars at most and have to pay the same rates or higher than people that are well off. Even though they don't benefit from it because their car is worth less than a year of insurance payments. And people that can afford expensive cars can benefit from it. The poor get zero benefit it only hurts them. It's not poor people's fault that there's all these 200k cars on the road and boomers double dipped in health insurance that makes the cost of a collusion cost a literal fortune. It's not poor people's faullt this society is ridiculously litigious. If everybody drove $1k cars nobody would give a fuck about insurance but when the poor do it, it's a problem. America is a country that criminalises being poor a thousand different ways.

Insurance bonuses for being a good driver should be better, though. I've driven for 18 years and have no at-fault or partially at-fault acccidents and still pay $266 CD/m. If anything, there should be harsher punishments for people who damage property while uninsured, including jail time followed by deportation for illegals, and deportation for non-citizens caught in any circumstance driving uninsured. The real rackets are the costs of cars, non-uniform codes of production, like having all bumbers and lights the same height off the ground, and then finally the ridiculous amount some people sue for in America, and the pitiful amount in Canada. Anyway, I was driving without insurance for a long time, but recently since I have a little money I started paying into a mutual insurance company. It helps me feel a little better that there's no corporation making profit off of me but it still makes me seethe that I'm paying it
