Nuclear bombs are much smaller than many people think, especially the kind that'd be used in any sort of exchange. There are not many of the huge ones ready to go. In the event of an exchange some major cities would be leveled, a dam or two might be destroyed and flood an area but most countries struck would continue to function as normal anywhere that wasn't struck. Like when you see hurricane impacts on the coast but life is fine a couple cities over or major tornadoes. It is valuable for people to be afraid of nuclear war though so propaganda makes sure people are as afraid of it as possible, a scared populace is easier to control. The "Nukes aren't real" statement used to be referencing this fact, nuclear bombs are not the threat you've been led to believe but then some pants on head retards interpreted it literally.

If the total nuclear payload of the entire globe were detonated in as many major population centres as possible, and including fallout and famine from the 2 years of nuclear winter that would cause, casualties worldwide cap out at about 5 billion. It would be the single worst thing to ever happen but it would not be the end of the world.

There's lots of myths but the destruction would be the extreme. If there's a bunch of missile failures there's still planes capable of dropping nukes. The main advantage of nukes is that the bombs being very big means the port you hit isn't just damaged and needs to be repaired but completely rebuilt. Power grid would be completely fried simply because the sudden destruction of a city means the power grid instantly overloads and parts of it just explodes. Just a complete collapse of the economy with nobody having any means of restarting it resulting in mass starvation and other problems.
