They looked fucked and emaciated because poor people in small villages in a warzone tend not to be well fed.It's also why there's historical mistakes with the population and how they are clothed because the photographers were just making it up as they went along. It's common knowledge and nobody denies it because it was common practice of the era. It's not about "forgetting" to bring a camera. Most wartime footage was recreated after the fact. British Pathé, that great bastion of authenticity, would just re-enact battles with whoever they could nab at the time and turn it into a short film for news reels.
