Postwar European peace was partly built on forced population transfers and ethnic homogenization on a massive scale. Borders were redrawn, millions were expelled, and countries like Poland became overwhelmingly homogeneous. It was violent but it reduced internal tensions and helped create stable nation-states. You could even think that in a way postwar Europe enjoyed 50 years of peace built on exclusion after the Nazis drove out the Jews, ironically.

That’s why modern Europe promoting multiculturalism can seem contradictory from the begining when its stability was, at least in part, built on enforced homogeneity or exclusionary nationalism
