Before then, you had to own property or have political connections to participate in voting.The United States was somewhat different and uneven. If you were poor and White in the South, you were excluded from voting just as Blacks were. Both Australia and New Zealand had manhood sufferage and were genuinely representative until relatively recently (50 or so years). Since then, we've had successive governments who didn't give a shit about their own people.So yeah, democracy is a sham.
