Oberholtzer, a worker at the Indiana Department of Public Instruction, was a 28 year old German-American Methodist woman in Indianapolis in 1925. While at a party for the governor that year she met the Grand Dragon of the Indiana Klan, David Stephenson. They started briefly dating after Stephenson approached her multiple times. Two months later, Stephenson has her driven to his house where he forces her to drink whiskey until she becomes sick. He then abducts her on a train where he rapes her multiple times and bites her severely across her body. She attempts to poison herself with mercury chloride from a drugstore at one stop and she dies less than a month later in bed, sick from internal bleeding and a severe staph infection from the wounds. Stephenson initially claimed they were in a car accident to her parents, but would ultimately be sentenced for murder because doctors testified the bite wounds and resulting infection would’ve been enough to kill her. He testified against several state leaders, including the governor and the head of the state Republican Party, who accepted bribes from the Klan, and it destroyed their reputation, losing the KKK 178,000 members in 2 years in the state.Stephenson would be paroled in 1950, but violating it, resentenced to 10. Paroled again in 1956 he would move down to Tennessee and die in 1966 at the age of 76, getting another allegation of sexual assault against a 16 year old under his belt in 1960.
