If you look up old 19th century road maps of the countryside you will see most country roads are the same as they were in the pre-car era.. but if you have ever tried walking cross country you will know it is extremely unpleasant and almost no one does it, due to cars. The simple fact is that the preexisting pedestrian/horse road network was taken over by cars, since cars drive all other forms of movement off the roads... This is very important, more important than most people will admit, since walking is the foundation of society and democracy, the town square was the public meeting point. This is also why bars and alcohol are disappearing, since it is impossible to get drunk when everyone has to drive home afterwards. Again, a huge part in social life disappeared.
