The US needs good relations with Japan to keep presence in Asia, which becomes more and more relevant as the ME goes up in flames and the US ups oil production domestically. Geopolitically Japan is more important than any other country and they're also dependent on oil/gas imports. If the ME fails (which it likely will) then the US needs to support Asia's markets itself otherwise Russia swoops in with cheap oil and corners them. Japan still hasn't taken the Kuril Islands nor do they have any intention on doing so.
