Sin (or disobeying the law) is extremely devastating. “The wages of sin is death.”The law is ordered around the premise that God’s creation is good, and is worth protecting and preserving. “God created everything and it was good.” The law is sometimes complex and is articulated in a number of ways. “I am the lord your god. You shall love me with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.” “Do not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” One way of understanding the law would be to imagine that God says to us, “I love you, my creation, so much that I would die for you. If you really knew that, you would die for me too. The lives of the martyrs prove this. I commanded your ancestors, Adam and Eve, not to endeavor to know good and evil (obedience and disobedience; righteousness and unrighteousness). They, like Judas, thought that they knew better than me or didn’t trust me or wanted to be my equal. When they sinned against me by disobeying me, they realized how good I am, and how good my creation is. They were ashamed of themselves because of their disobedience. When I walked among my creation, the reason why I was put to death was because the descendants of Adam and Eve thought that they knew better than me or didn’t trust me or wanted to be my equal. I am love, and there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend. When my disciples really knew that, they became united to my cross. If you try to be my equal, death is unavoidable. So obey me, so that you will not die.”
The good news is that God, because of his goodness, righteousness, and perfect obedience, conquered sin. By becoming subject to the powers of this world and inevitably dying, he brought the devastating reality of sin to its fullest manifestation when he was crucified. By rising from the dead, he proved that he could still have a relationship with his friends in spite of their sins (which is why it's so tragic that Judas, who never repented, never got to experience Jesus’s peace). God proved that the wages of sin is death, and lives forever because he is entirely good. Therefore, only God can forgive sin. Jesus, through his mystical body: the Church, is here on Earth. He is ready to forgive our sins when we are ready to repent. We may still eat after we are washed.
