The failure in both cases was political. Not sure how it would work out militarily now. But it would still be a political failure in this case as well even if there is a military victory. It's kinda a strange thing. We really didn't lose either the Iraq war nor the Afghanistan war. We won those. What we lost was a political campaign and had a failed occupation.
