It is my belief that when everything starts going to complete shit, the elite/wealthy are planning on releasing a virus to wipe out a majority of people to protect themselves. It's the most logical and feasible scenario to play out. It is also probable that they already have a vaccine to the virus as well, and it will be used when they reemerge to take control of the remaining population using the vaccine as a carrot for compliance.

They'll just release a virus and head off to their bunkers, pretend to be working on solving the problem while everyone dies and then magically appear with the vaccine solution to save the day after most people have died.
