Humans are the absolute peak of the ecosystem so require incredible things just to remain alive. When colonising other worlds, we need to start from the bottom up. For example, it's impossible to have a permenantly manned lunar bade right now, but I think it is well within our power to have a permenantly inhabited station filled with bacteria who are in a self sufficient ecosystem.
