Alcohol is genuinely not good for you. Even though I'm a 35 year old boomer, and drinking was a huge of part our socialization process growing up, I personally don't drink much these days. My stomach just doesn't respond well after a couple drinks, and being hungover just hits differently when you're older. But drinking really is tied in with so much of the social fabric of our society. It's the "social lubricant". You go to the pub because... it's not your home, and that's where the people are. When you get there, you don't know what to do with your body so you have a couple drinks. Maybe that causes you to let your guard down a bit, and you start talking to the table next to you, and so forth.At the end of the day, nobody gives a shit what fucking vices you have. But there's a clear relationship between people becoming more socially isolated and a decrease in alcohol consumption. Like, I can't imagine meeting a woman and frantically ripping each other's clothes off without alcohol. I'm just a really mellow, controlled person in my day-to-day life. I don't have wild swings in emotion otherwise. And sometimes life can get a bit boring without those wild swings and animalistic energy. Alcohol is kind of important for breaking your own boundaries and overcoming certain mental obstacles.
