I do agree that Christianity itself does need Judaism because it is the pillar upon which the movement is built. I know for certain that Jews who underwent the covenant of Abraham entered into the covenant themselves, so to this end it makes great sense that this still can be done. As for those who have not forged a covenant at all, that is where I worry. I believe it's a Second Temple change. The Jews were only in exile in Babylon for a relatively short time compared to the post Second Temple period and it was in this period that we got Halacha and rabbinical Judaism, as well as the Talmud formally finalized as far as I understand it (this is off the top of my head so I may have some errors) and typically the real issue was needing to figure out how to keep the faith while in exile with no land and no temple. One of the big reasons I think they introduced this Matrilineal thing was to circumvent the conflict that arises from rape in wartime. Since the father could be anyone, it's easier to just say the baby belongs to the mother. I was reading something that also helped me sort of understand why they made the whole matrilineal thing important and it has to do with the condition of slavery.
