Actual USFS employee here to latitude a completion on this bullshitOverall the plan is retarded, but not a death blow for the agency. It literally solves no problems and is going to spend a bunch of money to not fix anything that actually needs to be fixed, like the NEPA process taking forever. Giving more control to the states is kind of a good idea. However the regional offices have a lot of generational knowledge; they're not firing them per se, but they're scattering the employees out across the old regions so people that don't want to move to to a new state are SOL. Same for the research stations, the biggest loss there is the fire research lab in Missoula. A lot of good work gets done there. What really fucked the agency was Elon. Almost all of the employees that were fired (and then re-hired and then allowed to resign with six months of free pay lol) were young seasonals that cleaned shitters and laid out timber sales. Only old employees are left outside of fire and are just being shuffled around into details to cover for all the empty positions because of the ongoing hiring freeze. And now they're reducing vehicle fleet by a third, INCLUDING fire vehicles which is fucking retarded. There's no communication, the timber market is in the shitter and things as simple as buying toilet paper has to go through a ridiculous purchasing process at the Washington Office. Basically everything is worse but we are told to more with less which has been going on well before Trump got here.

Dimension lumber is expensive because of distributors and middlemen fucking over mills and loggers. Loggers can't make cutting timber pencil out because the log prices are so low especially for western pine. The wood is there and for sale but no one will buy it. For instance the current market rate for a mill is around $300/thousand board feet in my area and it should be double that. When diesel is >$5/gal that can't turn a profit. A lot of the mills have shut down completely. And "cutting underbrush" is expensive as fuck. For precommercial thinning you have to throw over $1000 per acre at it to even begin to make it work and you have to treat hundreds or thousands of acres to make a difference. Cutting funding for the government to do that doesn't solve the problem.
