There's a 1/20 chance that it will burn up according to experts.

>Charlie Camarda, a former NASA astronaut and an expert on heat shields, says NASA should never have launched Artemis II. The agency does not understand well enough the chances that the heat shield might fail, he says, and the mission, a success so far, could end with the deaths of the astronauts.

>“I’m going to pray that nothing happens,” he said during an interview a few days before the launch of Artemis II.

>His hunch is that there is a 95 percent chance that the astronauts will return safely. But that would mean a 1-in-20 odds of a disaster.

>“NASA definitely does not have the data to show that it’s safe,” he said. “I realized that they were using the same flawed thinking and crude analysis tools, similar to Columbia, similar to Challenger.”

Checked. Actually the coating is what protects from most of the heat. NASA makes tiny microscopic glass beads filled with inert gas then apply it as a coating. You can buy commercial grade stuff for like $100/gallon or buy normal paint and buy the ceramic spheres separately for $10.

>NASA wants us to believe that tiny piece of shit moved 3000+ mph
The ascent module had an average acceleration of about 0.4g, or about 8 mph/s
It burned for 7 minutes, or 420 seconds

v(t) = v0 + a*t
v(420) = 0 + (8mph/s) * (420s)
v(420) = 3360 mph

well to put that into perspective a glock probably fires a bullet at about 700-1,200 mph.
The most high powered weapons ever made with the most high powered ammo could scrape about 3,000 mph bullet speed.
So a debris bolt would hit a lot harder than the most powerful bullet ever fired. It would destroy the supposed “spacecraft” and its instruments and kill anyone inside.

It’s back

Why are they so bad at filming this shit?

actually it's insanely good, for what it is

they're on a boat, waves lol
where did nasa spend their budget?

SpaceX does it way better

Now time to go back to bombing Iran

Thank you, Hidden Figures

Should have dropped this capsule on Iran with no parachutes

heat shields are so 1969 and its obvious the jews are gonna need kentucky cried astronauts cant have these clowns talking about the pooninites secret weapon

Couldn't they dock the ISS, transfer to a proper shuttle and then descend? I know its a bunch of extra steps, but I feel like we have a pretty reliable process for re-entry from the ISS
>>
>>532913728
Of course. Going to space doesn't confer immortality.
>>
>>532916133
They probably don't have enough fuel on board to actually get in the same orbit as the ISS
>>
>>532916275
Correct. A free return form the moon puts you way past orbital speed at Earth. If you wanted to lighten the burden on a heat shield, it would be more efficient to just pack more fuel to slow down. But that's really expensive compared to just using a better heat shield. That's been a solved technology for decades.
>>
>>532902875
why are germans so monumentally retarded? even the United Slave States of Russia in 1969 conceded that we landed on the moon.
>>
>>532916133
They're going much to fast to be able to slow down

>Why would I trust the "hunch" of some faggot who had no access to the data analysis of Artemis I's heat shield?
Because the Orion module is a 20-year-old project that has barely been used and anyone at NASA understands what the module is and it's drawbacks. They wanted a new module for Artemis but the Exploration Module failed in the development stage, so Orion is their fallback option.
>>
>>532916534
They can slow down. It's just a lot cheaper to slow down by aerobraking than with retrorockets.

Docking shit is fucking difficult and also requires a lot of delta V. Theoretically it's possible but skimming the atmosphere is free breaks, no delta-v required. Docking at the ISS requires heaps more fuel, like a shit ton more.
Space is hard but landing is retarded easy, aim for atmosphere with elliptical orbit if you're going in too fast
>>
>>532904335
That was the Boeing Starliner module that was designed to talk astronauts to the ISS. And yeah, it failed pretty miserably. At least no one was killed.

big fucking brain could atmosphere break and shape orbit flawlessly to hook into ISS but that would require at least 2, probably more orbital passes and all that shit takes precious fucking time where shit can go wrong.
humans are still amateurs at this shit, this is the biggest furthest manned mission even if they didn't touch the moon at all.

>"Hurr durr I'm a former, bitter employee and all my colleagues are retards and the entire organization does not understand the thing it has been doing for 60 years unlike me of course."
Except this is absolutely true. NASA has been fucking retarded in the last 30 years. Their crowning achievement has been "inventing" an SLS that is basically the Space Shuttle without the shuttle. They also recycled a barely operational Orion module that was designed 20 years ago because their Exploration Module failed and couldn't be used with the SLS. And Artemis II for some fucking reason did a lunar orbit instead of testing equipment for an actual mission to the moon which will mostly be executed by SpaceX and will require Orion to do an Earth rendezvous with the SpaceX Starship which will do all the actual moon landing stuff. NASA can't into space right now.
>>
>>532916841
No they can't - they don't have the fuel.
If they did they'd need more fuel to launch that fuel etc.
Docking is in low Earth orbit.
Aerobraking uses the atmosphere.

because Congress wanted NASA to develop the Space Shuttle instead, due to its promise to be a rapidly reusable way to get into space(it wasn't). The whole point of Apollo was to land a man on the Moon by the end of the decade, and they already accomplished that. Sure, NASA would've loved to build a base on the moon and go on to Mars, but there was little political support after the first landings, and Apollo 13's failure didn't help things.

We decided to babysit niggers instead.

>No they can't
In case you are unaware, the capsule slows down before it lands on Earth.

the space shuttle is good but they should have made it look dumber, i.e. more dildo-shaped. It sounds dumb but Elon Starship has it right with its radial symmetry. The heat tiles on it would be far easier to replace if they chose a more tubular/conical design and that was a major price pain point. It could still keep its planey crew window and wings and general plane feasability

Their intial approach was like mach 37 or something like that. Atmospheric friction is the only way you're gonna realistically slow down. Maybe if we overbuild in a major way sending up far far far more fuel and weight than neccesary in a way we're likely not even currently capable of building a large enough launch vehicle for, or have a separate prior launch just to send up a separate fuel module that's docked with in low orbit before departure drastically overcomplicating the mission for no reason, and pose unnecessary risks planing an approach that allows for falling into a stable orbit without slingshotting back out once sufficient speed is lost and then doing strategic burns at key points across multiple orbits to sufficiency shed speed for docking it would be possible but there's no reason to do that. It's massive hurdles, increased resources, and unnecessary risk for no gain.
