Because the government couldn't tax it or regulate it.
Most moonshiners were sent to prison for failure to pay taxes in addition to having illegal stills or evading the law.
So they may make it legal to home brew but they'll likely pass legislation to settle the law on selling it or transporting it.

It, largely, wasn't an alcohol in today's meaning, retard The beer was relatively weak, and functioned primarily as a way to preserve drinkable water.
There was no water treatment back then, and stale water was almost instantly going bad, but a low alcohol content in medieval beer was a water disinfectant and preservative. The same way Romans drank heavily diluted wine.
There's a difference between 1-1,5% beer and moonshine.

You're confusing them with regular people drinking weak brews, which were still 2-3% and still enough to get you tossed if you drink them like water, and they only held themselves back enough to still be functional. They also drank stronger beers with meals and all kinds of overproof shit for special occasions.

Deal. Im 40 years old and have cirrhosis of the liver. I drank 1/2 gallon of vodka a day for 5 years straight. In summer of 2025 I took myself to the ER because my eyes were yellow and I knew I was dying. I had a MELD score of 26. I was able to stop drinking and going on 1 year of no alcohol. My body is still fucked up. I still have a cirrhosis but my MELD score has improved to where I am no longer eligible for at this time for a transplant. Alcohol is degenerate because it does nothing but deteriorate your body. You become lazy. It corrupts you. It is by definition degenerate.

The sad part is them throwing the book at Sutton was the last retarded gasp of the government's attempts to try and fight moonshine.

My dad's father was a district attorney in western NC and he had been given a case against Popcorn Sutton back in like 1998. Recognizing that Popcorn was harmless he gave him the absolute minimum slap on the wrist charges he could get away with. The day after the trial a box full of mason jars full of moonshine appeared on my friend's doorstep in the middle of the night.

Sadly ten years later the government brought new charges against Popcorn and got some hardass jackass DA to go after him and they killed the poor man. Damned shame.

When did you start drinking. What prompts you to drink.
I was an alcoholic. Never really got into drinking liquor around the clock, but I would buy and drink a 6 pack everyday after work. Sometimes I would grab 4 tall boys. Sometimes a 12 pack.
I quit drinking because the job required it. But when I was at home I would drink from the moment I got home til the night before I had to go back out.
What really got me to quit was hating the feeling of hangovers. I just didnt want to waste any more days in bed with a banging headache.
Started drinking in my early teens.
Mostly prompted by socializing.
Began drinking at home once I turned 21.
Mostly prompted by being poor and bored.

>When did you start drinking. What prompts you to drink.
Like 10 or 11? Stole a warm beer and thought it tasted like ass. Didn't give it another try until mid teens. At that point I could easily appreciate the cold refreshingness and buzz of a half decent beer. But at that stage of life I voluntarily chose the cheapest shit in favor of achieving the drunk state in an efficient way over enjoying the taste and was happy to shoulder-tap hobos and get wasted on piss-tasting 40s with gutter punks for the fun of it.
>I was an alcoholic. Never really got into drinking liquor around the clock, but I would buy and drink a 6 pack everyday after work. Sometimes I would grab 4 tall boys. Sometimes a 12 pack.
My framing crew used to get drunk in the car on the way to the bar after work and then do coke and drink more. I slid in and out of that life without any ling term problems.
>I quit drinking because the job required it. But when I was at home I would drink from the moment I got home til the night before I had to go back out.
I would say you shouldn't drink alone, but I was doing that five nights out of seven all through my 20s, but with friends, and its not like thats healthier physically.
>What really got me to quit was hating the feeling of hangovers. I just didnt want to waste any more days in bed with a banging headache.
I just started drinking more water between beers and not letting myself get embarrassment making drunk, but frankly that threshold depends on the night and the company and can be anywhere from tipsy to talking your way out of felony charges
>Began drinking at home once I turned 21.
Mostly prompted by being poor and bored.
Drinking alone at home in your teens will absolutely fuck you for life. See that's when you smoke weed instead. Far less destructive and you'll have an epiphany once in a while and come up with a clever idea.

>The film was made to encourage farmers to grow hemp for the war effort because other industrial fibers, often imported from overseas, were in short supply. The film shows a history of hemp and hemp products, how hemp is grown, and how hemp is processed into rope, cloth, cordage and other products.
>Hemp for Victory is a black-and-white United States government film made during World War II and released in 1942, explaining the uses of hemp, encouraging farmers to grow as much as possible. During World War II, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was lifted briefly to allow for hemp fiber production to create ropes for the U.S. Navy but after the war marijuana reverted to its de facto illegal status.[1]

Yes no maybe so. But it's a lifestyle and a way to make money. They can also make their own ethanol during gas crisises.

Now you might figure it out now.

Making alcohol taste great is a skill and generations of brewing and distilling.

Alcohol are technically calories and calories is technically food. It might not be healthy healthy but it can substitute low calories in times when food is low.

Every culture and civilization discovered that. White people in Europe lived through harsh winters not wasting any calories.

Popcorn Sutton has been vindicated. Dude wasn't a bad guy wasn't making hard drugs just some legendary moonshine in the woods to support his family.

If it's industrial hemp they can make bio diesel and even gasoline substitutes. The Amish are doing that now and they learned about it 300 years ago before 1776.

Goddamn fucking FRUIT CAKES. There’s only two nations in the world that know about beer, from the exact same tree, namely us and Belgium. Outside of that it gets worse in every direction. I don’t want you dumbasses talking about, thinking about, getting your muddy feet into our lovely beer culture. Stick to your own junk, don’t muddy the fucking waters.

>>
>>532911773
It doesn't make swamp water potable or palatable but it certainly helps with still water. Grog helped make drinking water on ships a little bit safer to drink and the same goes for beer. A pint of beer will stay drinkable longer than a pint of water that was boiled the same time the beer was made. It doesn't preserve it forever, but it would generally be safer to drink.

>HUR DUR MIND OVER MATTER HUR DUR
you do realize that addiction is real. people that are piping down a bottle of hard liquor a day are physically dependent on it. like if they build up their tolerances that high, they have to keep drinking or they can die due to withdrawals.
you literally have to wane people off alcohol by progressively lowering the doses.
please stop pretending like because you listened to a bodybuilding you tube motivational video that everyone is just a degenerate because they haven't made up the choice to quit. sometimes its more complicated than that.

>you do realize that addiction is real
Of course I do. I worked with them for over a decade. People like the guy I was replying to are a dime a dozen. Very few have the wherewithal to be aware of their tendencies and build a life around avoiding those temptations that they're genetically unequipped to deal with if they're sitting around enticing them. The overwhelming majority are like him and ruin their lives knowing full well what is happening but they refuse to take the initiative to help themselves or god forbid ask someone for assistance in a real way. There's a reason people in the sphere of addiction assistance have a saying to wait for rock bottom. It's because most of them are exactly like that guy and will not even consider changing their lifestyle before they wake up one day with piss eyes exactly like he describes.

The point is alcohol isn't the issue. It's stubborn narcissistic addicts who are. They do the same shit with gambling and thrillseeking and weed and any drug you can think of plus tons you probably haven't heard of. They're looking for something to ruin their life with and come hell or high water they will no matter how you plead or try to guide them back on the path. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. And fuck you for carrying water for those fucks. As a younger more naive man I was like you but after years and years and working closely with hundreds of people like that you realize that there's no saving those people from themselves. Only they can make the choice to unfuck their shit and very few of them have many years left to live once they finally end up in a dire enough situation to convince them to make that choice.

Also
>like if they build up their tolerances that high, they have to keep drinking or they can die due to withdrawals.
Shut the fuck up with that shit. Just because you saw some bullshit on youtube shorts about withdrawals doesn't mean you know jackshit.

More often than by mistake toxic hooch was poisoned intentionally, either by shiners seeking more profit (a reputation for the strongest stuff) or literally glowies trying to justify prohibition and and all the ills that came with it.
Same shit still goes on today with opiates btw.

However, the government has no legitimacy to regulate the production, sale and usage of alcohol.
Anybody who disagrees is a boot-licker: a title far worse than a drunk.

Relatively weak? OK retard. Have a you. The beer that monks brewed was in some cases stronger than wine. Chimey for example. Full stop. To all the soulless shills on here, kill yourselves. You are the blight on humanity. You are insects and deserve torture until heart failure. You sold your soul and will never get it back unless you commit acts of redemption against your own kind and adopt a Christ mind. Accept your savior. Your dark hearts need light. Step out of the shadows, it feels so good.

It was always mostly about taxation.
Historically people were self sufficient.
They had no income to tax.
Property taxes were nearly 0.
Hard liquor was something people "needed" (as white people) that could be taxed.
It was a huge source of tax revenue actually. Very significant.
The first rebellion in America was the whiskey rebellion.

You can't comprehend how bad modern life is and how far America has fallen.

I've been drinking 1l of vodka per day for the last 10 years and I'm fine, yearly checkups always come out fine. Last year I had a problem with blood pressure, but stopped drinking for a month and fixed it.
So the line to die is probably between 1 and 1,8 liters

Someone has to challenge it. Laws don't just overturn themselves. The Comstock Act lasted 110 years until the Supreme Court tossed it.
