They were separated and going through a divorce, yet still living together.
I understand how this happens due to financial pressures, but my strong advice to any anon going through a divorce is make the physical separation happen ASAP and don’t make excuses. I had a brief period were me and my soon-to-be ex-wife were still living under the same roof. It is the only time in my life I have had actual fear for my personal safety. A lot of dark forces are unleashed during a divorce and things can get very weird and dangerous.
