To me, a garden is meant to invite nature into your home so that you can enjoy it in comfort.

You could also see it as an extension of your house’s aesthetics, arranging plants such that they complement the effect of your architecture.

You could even turn it into a museum, collecting rare and unusual species and putting them on display for the pleasure of both you and your neighbors.

Or, if you’re a boomer, you could kill everything there and leave it as a desert - taking some kind of sick pleasure in your total opposition to life itself.

the grass is just a nice ground cover for large expanses. I do have clover and other ground covers around in certain areas.

>>533352030
Lawns were literally invented so the rich could show off the fact they could afford to have vast tracts of land with no practical use whatsoever, in a time when any urban greenspace was normally used for food or grazing.
The point of a lawn is to have no real practical purpose. Its one of the dumbest chimp bravado shows our species has ever managed to come up with.

Having a lawn for the kids is nice, but you don't have to fall into the boomer American trap of a pesticide-soaked monoculture. My lawn has maybe 10 different kinds of grass in it, plus clover, daisies, moss, and whatever else I feel like sprinkling on there, plus all of the weeds that I can't be bothered pulling up.
Here's what it looks like at this exact second. Probably needs a mow, but otherwise I think it's fairly healthy. The kids enjoy it.

These people are chasing a status symbol from hundreds of years ago that's hopelessly out of date, it's kind of sad to see. In the late 1700s a neatly mown lawn was a sign of status and wealth because it meant you were able to pay a bunch of people to laboriously cut your grass by hand in a never-ending battle against it growing back, but as technology improved and lawnmowers (the manual kind) massively reduced the barrier to the neat lawn club the focus for big impressive gardens shifted in the complete opposite direction with elaborate flower displays and intricately sculpted hedges and shit. Apparently the average American Joe missed the memo and got hardstuck on the "waow short grass means I'm successful" part.

to be allowed to have a garden one should be required to plant a number of trees and other things and also be required to plant a minimum of several thousand calories worth of fruits and veggies per year.

It's cargo cult shit. Boomers grew up generally aware of how their parents and their parents before them kept their properties but didn't ever fully understand the why behind the habits so when they grew up they took what they remembered, misapplied some, misremembered other stuff, ignored a whole lot then applied it to a completely different setting and condition than existed for their elder's generations. The reason their parents had manicured lawns around their houses is because they came from more rural areas and they had trees and bushes and wilderness beyond the lawn. The point of the lawn was to outcompete bushes and trees and shrubs that animals and insects would nest in. Lawns were exclusion zones to keep critters from living directly next to or on the surface of the home so they wouldn't wreck your siding or get into your attic or basement. Lawns were a practical thing. But now everyone lives in developments where the lawn is literally the only living thing for thousands of feet so it being manicured nolonger matters. The only critters that are going to get into your house are raccoons and only because your dumbass wife lets stuff fall out of the garbage/yardwaste bin and leaves a trail leading to somewhere they can crawl into somewhere they shouldn't be.
>>

How can it be allowed for any retard to spray a gorillion litres of poison everywhere on their property and poison everything in the area as well as the groundwater.

Why do we even fucking need all these poisons? A rational nation state would ban that shit and devote a % of GDP to building mega facilities for long term food storage for the excess production to hedge against locusts and disease and shit. You know, like how every civilisation did for all time until someone decided it was easier to just spray poison on everything.

Manicured lawns are an English inspired aesthetic, they don't belong anywhere it's not natural. You shouldn't be wasting water to keep your imported grass alive. Everyone here should take the desert rose pill. Cactus, rocks, sand, old tv's stacked on top of each other, old cars, a cholo.

There is nothing more boomer than a perfect lawn. They use resources to fertilize, to weed, to have someone mow and edge. They care for it or pay someone else to once or twice a week. They even water the lawn daily and invest in automated sprinkler systems. It serves no function except to show affluence. They could have a garden, or flowers. But no, the only diversity they want is browns who they employ to care for their lawns.
Grass seed used to be mixed with clover, which fertilized the grass. But boomer greed made them remove clovers and demonize them as weeds. Instead, fertilizer was sold separately to profit the boomer.

>>
There was this neighborhood when I was a kid that everyone called the shitty one. Trees everywhere.
All the "better" neighborhoods cut all the fucking trees down. It was in the south so it naturally became unbearable and nothing outside can survive in open sun with no coverage. So now that poorfag shit neighborhood is the only nice one. Easily 20 degrees cooler there than anywhere else in town.

Everyones answer is wrong. The real reason the stripes appear is from going back and forth in straight lines. You dont need a roller, nor is it cut in different lengths..its all the same height. The sun helps pop the stripes better when the angle is right. Most mower decks..the front sits lower than back..which pushes the grass blades down in the direction of travel. Diamonds are made from going cross hatch back and forth straight lines. Circles are just going in a circle one eay..then changing direction for next layer of circle.

Working for landscaping company in Canada they put me on the lawnmower team. Only for a week and a few days. My European brain could not process diagonal pattern lawnmowing. Something deep inside me was creating a mental blockade so to speak. The supervisors were cool, they could sense my confusion, disgust and the existential crisis this was causing. In just a week I lost weight, stopped eating and sleeping, barely talking or smiling.
One Canadian drove over his lawn with his 4x4 and wrecked it so we had to lay down new lawn for 14$k. A few days after we finished he drove over it again. Another 14k. He did this 2 more times paying 56k for an ugly tiny piece of lawn.
I think it's all the new houses breathing out formaldehyde and other chemicals that destroys their brains. The number of miscarriages in the neighbourhood was crazy, I wasn't the only one who noticed that.

It's a balance... someone who lives near me has one of those "full" yards where everything is overgrown. You can tell it's deliberate and not just neglect, but it stresses me out...as if triggering some kind of primordial instinct that I might get ambushed by a lion. I need some field of view, and also landscaping reduces pest activity and other issues. There needs to be a balance

I have a small property but in the five years I’ve been here I got rid of all the grass and Home Depot special plants.

I focused on vertical production with lots of trellised berry vines and currants, espaliered fruit trees, edible ground covers and lots of plants for pollinators. I made raised beds for vegetables and grow huge wine cap mushrooms in the mulch along a shaded area. Last year I build a pond and planted/added lots of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants.

My neighbours and people walking by are always commenting on my gardens. My front yard is basically landscaped with edibles and pollinators and even the walkway is made from pavers surrounded by blue star creeper and ground thyme.

It looks 1000 times better than some boomer hellscape and I have lots of pollinators, insects and birds. It’s fun to work on and my kids enjoy harvesting and eating what I grow. I like making preserves and fruit leather so that’s another nice activity.

For a small property I have a very good yield, it’s fun and it’s aesthetically appealing.

The other two is just street facing between privacy fence and property line, and I want to turn into a prairie and never mow it again. I’ll look at that site and compare to the local companies some more, thank you.

You're a fool that doesn't understand freedom units.
YES measuring chemicals or other things in science, which requires absolute accuracy) is easier and more efficient with a base-10 system.
Base-12 is what you need for good enough. The Pyramids, ancient Greek temples, Big Ben, the finest Swiss watches, Atlantis, Lemuria, etc were not built using metric. Because metric has no real world measurement. It had to be defined FROM Base-12. Meaning Base-12 is used as a root to define metric, in the speed of light using seconds.

Who needs 236.5ml when you can just cup your hands into a bag of flour and get one cup of flour?
Both scales have their places. One is superior for science and metrology, the other is best for practicality.
