This reminds me of an anecdote from the trial of Joan of Arc where one of the french bishops was betraying joan and trying to take away the option of appealing to the catholic church itself instead of the english court. The guy Cauchon asked Joan which pope she would appeal to since there was a very public antipope at the time and a third claimant. When asked which pontiff she appealed to, joan replied, "There are two? By god there are two?" In confusion. Instantly, the tactic to lose her the support of the roman catholic pope had evaporated. The english priests in the court supposedly laughed out loud at this comment because she was so unknowing of the conflict that she got the number of rivaling popes wrong, but that was not recorded in the official transcript of the trial.
