>>533392108there was a really interesting thread a while ago (with an article in the OP) explaining this. there is a lot of evidence to suggest that japan has failed to adapt to current technologies. for example they were still using analogue data delivery systems (like floppy disks) well into the 2010s.

>>533392108I've been to Japan 3x for business, looking to expand my existing company into a new market. Japanese business practices are, without going into too much detail, archaic and have failed to adapt to a changing world. As the info graphic nicely outlines, Japanese culture is very resistant to disruption once established. They are intelligent, hard working people and very capable of innovation, but they are not capable of continuous innovation via disruption, which has defined much of the American business landscape over the last 30 years. What does this mean? Once a Japanese company achieves success, its rate of innovation slows down dramatically. The only way it can reset the innovation engine is through failure and humiliation. The Japanese company does not understand that it needs to continue innovating even after achieving success as defined by market viability. To it, the market is a static thing. People will always want VCRs. People will always want fax machines. People will always want laundromats. That's how they thing of these things. And when Japan hits crisis, which has happened many times throughout history, they will rapidly attempt to catch up, often with good results owing to their social cohesion, work ethic, and general intelligence. I am hoping to "buy the dip" on Japan.
