Interesting. Here in Texas at my local HEB's, cocoa pods started being sold.. The seeds within are alive and I've embarked on the technically challenging to nearly impossible task of growing cocoa trees in Central Texas.. The weather has been helping up until today. High temps and humidity. There's no growing these outdoors here even in the best favorable weather. Anything below 60°F and the seedlings fail. Any salinity or a misbalance of soil pH or in the water and they're fried. You cannot use just any soil. MiracleGro potting soil is utter trash. You must use ProMix, with pure vermiculite that you washed with distilled water. Then you must keep it all watered with no standing water, humidity between 70% to 80%, temperature between 80°F and 90°F in indirect sunlight. I've some germinating successfully. All that survive will be moved into a grow tent with intensive environmental controls. I've grown them in Puerto Rico, Florida and Guatemala. No, I'm not a spic. I'm half Japanese and Dutch. Just travelled a lot and lived in various places. I've grown just about every type of carnivorous plants and other very sensitive exotics.. But Theobroma cacao, you a baaad mofo if you can grow them outside of the tropics.
