All North Korean men and the majority of the women between the ages of 15 and 50 are part of the military to some extent, and that's not just a nominal thing like in China or Eritrea, every town and factory has heavy weapons like anti-aircraft guns or even tanks. They clearly have a high level of societal buy in, since otherwise they'd be having armed rebellions every other week.
They're mid tier. You can never leave and you go to prison if you question authority, but famine ended 20 years ago and quality of life is comparable to 90s China. People work and then go home and fish or go the bar with their friends. Shelter and basic healthcare are widely available. Crime rates are low. Life is stable. Preferable to most of Africa and the Arab world. Realistically if you're born into most poor nations you will never be able to leave either and will also have to deal with more disease and starvation and crime and government violence than you would in North Korea.
