But they could not call it SLOW for marketing reasons, so they make the normal mode "Turbo", and if you pushed it, it slowed it down.

Magnetic media is neat. Something really cool about pressing iron dust into plastic tape. Like a film reel, there was a physical location for the data all organized by time.
Also the magnetic head and speed controller meant you could use the same tape cassette or floppy disk, but could store more or less data in physically smaller spaces just by moving slower or having narrower tracks.

>But why this turbo button?
Turbo = full clock speed
(Not turbo) = clock speed limited to a known rate.

Compatibility setting for running old software that used clock cycles for timing. Turbo would run the game/program too fast and it would be unplayable or break.

You leave turbo on unless you need to turn it off for a specific program.

This is actually the correct answer. Games were written to run as fast as the hardware at the time could run them, so when newer, faster hardware was available (eg. a 486 running at 66 MHz compared to an original 8086 machine running at 5 MHz), you wanted to slow the machine down by turning the "turbo" off (toggling the clock speed down), to make the older games playable again.

It's actually the opposite.

Back then game speed was based on clock speed. So when cpus got faster old games wouldn't work well. So they added the turbo button that switched you to the old standard cpu speed to make old games work.

It wasn't due to shit cooling but more so because CPU's back then had no thermal safety measures built in and they would fry. Modern CPU's throttle or shut down when they overheat.

To slow the processor down.
Programmes today are synchronised with an arbitrary clocktick.
Back then, older programmes simply ran as fast as they could.
Imagine a game where playing it at 240fps means the game literally runs at 4x speed, taken to the extreme.
Original 8086 speed was 4,77Mhz iirc. A 66Mhz Pentium would run it 14x as fast. Too fast for games, too fast for many applications.
The turbo button was created to retard the processor in cases where it's too good.
Yes, the go fast button actually slows you down.

I’m building a Z80 computer and a turbo button is on my list. Need to do more research though, presumably it’s just a matter of having a separate clock circuit and switching what is feeding the CPU. If any anons are interested it’s a really neat project and fairly cheap to get buckets of ICs (desoldered, anyway).

Oldfag here.

I member when turning on a computer was instant. Nothing would load the A:\ drive would be ready right away, and you'd run whatever was in the floppy disk.

What most people don't realize is that thing could still load instantly. Modular reusability cuts cost on some regards at the expense of other things. It's merely a different design philosophy.

But we lost the technology.
>>
>>533507164
I get why they went away with A: and B: drives. But I'm still annoyed they decided dvd-rom is no longer useful to have in pcs. Even though it's still very viable even 10 years after they stopped adding them.
>>
>>533515949
Instant boot relied on the OS being on a ROM, which was a few dozen, or a few hundred of kilobytes in size, and frozen the way it was written to the ROM.
Non-volatile RAM would get us back to instant boot.

It's not just about rebooting. It's how everything needs to install and OS is a mess of registries that gets slower and messier over time.

There was a time Mac software didn't need to install. You could drag and drop it like a file on your PC, that's it it's ready to use. This wasn't just convenience, it was the standard.

Software has switched to shared resources philosophy. But at what cost?

Notice how we have x100 times more CPU and shit still gets laggy. Something is not right.

Look at free software like Blender. Blender is essentially fully portable, fully capable, not even heavy on hard drive. It has zero registry reliance. Uninstalling it is as easy as deleting it, no garbage left behind. Loads fast, works perfectly. If all software was like this it'd be a lot cleaner.

Making everything a shared dll is bullshit.
