In theory the USSR could have just kicked Germany outside of Poland's eastern territories (ethnically Ukrainian/Belarusian) and let Germany do whatever they wanted. Instead they chose to utterly defeat the country that attacked them and killed so many of their own people and end up giving Poland a large state that righted the map and actually ended many of the ethnic conflicts of the past.
