I bought that new cheap Macbook and don't want to ever use Windows again.
This is apparently a shitty version of MacOS but it's insane how much better it is than Windows has been at any point in the last decade

For me it's the VW Beetle and I'm not even a car guy. 20 years later VW had an emissions cheating scandal and their response to the financial pain was to stop selling its most iconic car. I miss the 90s, not just because I was young and feckless but because it was time of genuine optimism and experimentation.
Of course there has been a lot of cool stuff since then, but the US has never really recovered from 9-11 and it infected everything else. Even when you find something good there's lingering fear that i's gonna turn out to be fake and gay or that capitalists will kill it.

I've got an idea for a computer company that would make millions of dollars. You simply put brand new components into crazy colorful updated oldstyle clamshell style cases and sell them to teens
>>
>>533560897
If you have a global brand like the Beetle you find a way to renew it, give it an all-electric model or something even if costs you more in the short term. I literally can't think of anything from VW's current lineup. It would be like McDonalds deciding to stop selling the big mac.

You could be creating music, art, writing a story, or educating yourself, instead of passively using it like an extension of TV

steam deck is an exception
sure it looks like a psp sort of, but its a much larger display, plays full windows games, and has touchpads. launched a whole new class of computer and many competitors thats lack those cool touchpads.

apple's innovation was to take a PC, give the casing rounded corners and then to jack the price up by 100% (200% if you customized your apple with extra RAM and HDD space)
apple has always been no more than a fashion statement

i think part of it is simply that ultimate form factors have arrived. not much you can do with a laptop, screen, keyboard, touchpad... that's it. make the screen foldable i guess that'll be a thing.

in the past everyone was throwing all kinds of wild designs around, because the peak form had not yet been achieved. we were still in the fun experiment stage of neat looking but ultimately inferior designs to the peak forms they would evolve into. your blackberries and ipods and flip phones and such.

but the smartphone as a glass rectangle is peak. what more are you going to do? make it a triangle? that would be retarded. how do you improve on the rectangle? make it fold maybe, sure, foldables are a thing.

the most interesting smartphone recently was the lg wing. that was trying something new and bold looking. didn't sell well, lg stopped making phones shortly afterwards.

the televison evolved from an ornate wooden box to it's peak functional form: a flat glass rectangle

the phones and mp3 players in all their crazy designs evolved into the peak form: flat rectangles

tablet computers were always flat rectangles

and once you reach the peak functional form, a flat rectangle, there's nowhere to go from there, it doesn't get better than that. and so designs have stagnated.

>>533566102
they have flat rectangle smartphones now that can fold down into a flip phone

sure i have some nostalgia for pic related, but not enough to actually use one

yes, but i never heard much of the good bands on the radio/whatever....always had to dig for the good stuff, the same as today
yes, the pop stuff was better, but i never was into it as it's mostly trash

so where do we go from flat rectangles?

glasses. metas project orion prototype is the future. its a bit bulky, but its a prototype with a lot of tech, the consumer version will be a little more sleek.

its got waveguide displays in the lenses. now your flat rectangles can be floating in your vision. your tv, your smartphone, it'll all be in the glasses. there's a wristband that reads your nerve impulses to translate every subtle slight flick of your fingers into navigating the glasses.

this is the next peak form. you're skeptical, because we're not there yet. but i can imagine it and we're close.

i dont think the glasses will totally replace flat rectangles, we'll still be using displays and such a thousand years from now, but they will take a backseat to increasingly sophisticated glasses over the next century. after that who can say, maybe neural implants but i dont like that idea due to the abuse potential of the government hacking your brain, too intimate a tech for me. i'll stick to glasses and rectangles.
>>
>>533560249
That model was abandoned even faster than the G4 Cube and replaced by Apple themselves with the most boring slab of all-in-one computer behind the LCD.
>>
>>533565430
Underrated.

>>533560336
That's Nintendo, apple just stole things and make them gay.
>>
>>533566295
>>533566351
>>533566295
same but i still think its neat. if i was more into gaming id get one. gaming on the go dates back to the gameboy and the steamdeck is a huge step up from that, portable gaming has neared its peak functional form. and a rare piece of modern tech that isnt a flat rectangle.

>>533566524
ok but you are talking to me through a flat rectangle now and you probably carry one in your pocket too. nobody is forcing you. the surveillance state shit they slapped on to it has created the beginning of a horrific panopticon dystopia. but thats not the fault of the form, the flat rectangle is still peak form, if we could remove the shit the government put in our rectangles they would be perfect albeit kinda boring looking.
>>
>>533566564
This is a better explanation of your experience and I definitely agree that the mainstream was lame as hell and still is. I'm 41 for comparison.
>>
>>533565430
not wrong, but late 90s and early 00s the mac was a nice balance between workstation and personal computer if you were doing design work. the more market share they got the worse they became, now it's just a fashion statement.
>>
>>533566729
I still play my GBA, get yourself a flash cart if you have one. The newest game I play is probably hyperlight drifter and I only have 4 titles in my steam library. I mostly play ps2 and NES games so the steam deck is not necessary. Definitely a cool piece of tech but nah for me
>>
>>533566295
I can emulate PSP on my phone and that's plenty for free
>>
>>533566679
I still use an iMac I pulled out of a dumpster for music production. Just recording. For post processing I use audacity on Linux mint. I could probably do it with garage band but I just don't know the software as well.
>>
>>533566638
it'll be really fucking annoying though. you thought people were bad now always staring at their phones everywhere, it's about to get a lot worse. you wont be able to even look someone in the eyes without seeing their eyes dart around looking at floating virtual rectangles. the digital world will merge into the real with augmented reality, people will be looking at things that aren't actually there, projecting entire alternative realities on to real life eventually when the tech evolves to that.

and the fucking cameras, right on everyones face, all tied into the nsa. awful, the death of privacy. people will cope and say privacy already died with all the phones and surveillance cameras and they're right, but this is still worse.

and i still want one. i'll cover the cameras with stickers as i do my phone.
>>
>>533565310
>using a shitty handheld that's way too big and worse than a laptop for the same price

>>
>>533566755
cheers
yeah...i'd just say it was marginally better(mainstream culture)
the internet was one of the few things way, way better than today
gaming had higher highs and lower lows(good mix of great games and trash games)
music....i'm still getting around to listening to every decent band from the 70s-00s
it's almost endless

get an ayn odin 3
more portable than a steamdeck, can emulate all the old consoles and handhelds like your gameboy advance but with better controls, ps2 and nes too, even ps3. and now that steam for arm has recently arrived in the last couple months you can even play modern games like skyrim or witcher 3. though perhaps thats overkill for you if you're just playing tetris.

i'd get one if i already knew i'd never use it. not that into gaming. i like the tech though. its like a psp but with modern power.

some functions will stop working yes. they got these stickers you can open and close for smartphones. you wont need cameras for watching youtube or browsing the web. open them when you want to play ar pokemon or whatever nonsense.

Thanks fren I'll check it out
>>
>>533566965
because its linux and playing all these steam games on linux took some driver development. its come a long way from its bumpy release in terms of software support. ultimately though i was applauding its form and function more than its performance, which is merely adequate. and gaming with a laptop is a whole thing you need a table and plug in your mouse etc, its a different product.
