if the whale is real, all they need to do is build a water tight cylindrical structure around it that's sealed at the top and fill it with seawater. like a giant upside down metal pot. it doesn't have to be metal though, just something that can hold tons of water. once the whale is a floating a bit higher in the water they can just drag him out.

a metal ship hull might work.
