Brits don't pay a recurring property tax, because they don't rent their land and homes from the state
You pay a fee on initial purchase and a relatively flat council tax covers public services, but pensioners usually don't have to pay it

She's retarded. She can't make enough from that sale to help anyone. One kid? Maybe. But more than that? Waste of time.
She can't move into a second house for less than $500k now. There's sales tax on the house, closing costs, fees, etc.
If she has 3 kids, she'll probably be giving them a wopping $50k each from her proceeds. Barely a leg up in this crazy world.

This is demand side retardation, the price can only emerge if the market is cleared. If someone is willing to pay 500k but the seller won't sell for that price then the market isn't cleared there's no price to value it at. From the value side the buyers value the house only slightly above 500k while the seller values it slightly lower than 850k. No intersection= no market clearing thus no price for that particular asset

Bit it's not. Renters pay the council tax, even though they don't own the property.

It's just a tax, like many. For most people in the country it's a very small amount (Less than £200 a month, even for a £500k house).

No, that's what a more intelligent person than her would be doing. If you read the last paragraph of the article, it is abundantly clear that this woman is an absolute brick. She's pulling the classic boomer "I know what I've got" meme, and she will die before anyone makes an offer on her overvalued home. Or at least 100 jeets in dormitories, and a workshop small business within either or both the garages
Theres potential to turn that 850k shit real eatate into a thriving buisness that revalues the property to over 3 million dollars, and because of the endless jeets, also gives you supplemental income of $£30,000 quids a month
This is only possible through mass migration and selling out under your childrens feet and renovating to accomodate the horde

Ngl I am sort of familiar with australia and I like the US system better. You don't want holding costs for property to be too low or it encourages sitting on property.

I find the sales tax/stamp duty outrageous. You're buying a home you've saved for and a big chunk of your down payment goes to the fucking government? In the US a lot of the fees fall on the seller, not buyer, which i appreciate as someone that has bought a house but not sold one. Making the buyer pay fees to buy just makes buying harder, though one could argue that it just suppresses prices by the amount of the duty.

In the US, or in this state at least, you pay a local ad valorum tax to... provide local services. Lol sound familiar? And a transfer tax at purchase roughly $1.00 per thousand.

Its essentially the same structure. What I would ask is, let's say you owned 1k acres of rural ag property. What woukd a bong realistically pay annually for that? Here I would expect about 7k.
>>
Maureen is paying the same council tax as someone in a property worth less than half of hers; will probably avoid capital gains tax; and is trying to avoid inheritance tax. But she's unwilling to lower the asking price. It would be awful shame if Maureen dies in the next year or two wouldn't it, that will leave her wealthy family peeved.

>>
>>533589138
Here, there is no going rate. Value is assessed whether it is woodland, ag, commercial, and millage rate determines the total tax. So like I said $700 per hundred for ag/woodland would be fairly in the range though. But the metrics they use to determine value do depend on soil quality and what type of property it is, commercial, ag, woodland, etc.
>>

>>
>>533588004
I think he means everyone in the same municipality pays the same amount regardless how big their home is.
This way someone living in a massive estate that needs it own road to get there pays the same as someone living in a tiny flat without a parking spot.

>>
>>533589699
My understanding is that in the UK there are "price bands" for the council tax depending on value etc. which can themselves depend on the area.

Anyways, what does seem to be true is that woodland/ag is by itself not taxes on value separately in the UK which is good but I wouldnt trade that for an onerous estate tax system. This all made me curious and I did some looking at what a normal 2000sqft house decent quality, would run for council tax and it looks like 3k-5k a year which is not indifferent (perhaps even a bit more) than I would expect here. It would probably be like 2k-3k here.
>>
>>533588671
>What I would ask is, let's say you owned 1k acres of rural ag property. What woukd a bong realistically pay annually for that? Here I would expect about 7k.
NO
You don't pay council Tax for that land.
If you built a house on it and turned the ag land into a garden, you would then have to pay Council tax.

Yes I did some reading and see that. However (and again this is not representative of every state obviously) but if I took a large ag tract with a normal 2000sqft house here and tried to get a range of what I would pay on council tax (just the house in that case) it would not be that far off from what I would expect to pay here. I think over there the bigger issue is the estate tax though for those types of properties.

my parents house is worth less today than it was 20 years ago during the housing bubble. real estates not that valuable. you should be moving every 10-15 years so you don't get stuck with a heavy bag.

I think what he meant by "flat" is that it's not a % of your property value. It's banded by property value (based on some stupid assumption of equivalent value in 1992 or whatever) and everyone in that band pays the same amount. Large enhancements to the property can result in it being notched up a band, though.

Seller pays capital gains, and also stamp duty on wherever they're buying next.
But yes it's BS.

Since November 2024, I have had more than 20 house viewings, but of the four offers I’ve had, every single one has fallen through. I reluctantly dropped the price from £860,000 to £750,000 six months ago because I was desperate, and since then, the only viewer who expressed interest in making an offer has been unable to sell their own home.

People have asked me why I don’t just drop the price again, but I refuse to give my home away cheaply just because of the ridiculous economic climate we’re in, with a Government that fails to support hard-working people. They incentivise first-time buyers, but what about the people who want to move their families into bigger homes? And the ones like me who are desperate to downsize? Where is our help?

So, Greed. Which is a mortal sin.

>the bigger issue is the estate tax though for those types of properties.
I think the UK equivalent is Inheritance tax.
If you die then you are taxed (40%) on the value of your property if it exceeds a certain amount (£350,000)

Unfortunately, this tax bill usually falls on those inheriting.
There are lots of complicated bits of shit too.
You cound give all your wealth to your kids but it you die within 7 years, the kids are liable for the tax. (there is a sliding scale over those 7 years though).

Needless to say there are lots of work arounds involving trusts, etc.

Thats what I meant, to be clear estate tax is not a big issue here. The exemption is $15-30 million (depending on exemptions) I think. Which means you pay nothing for any estates with value under 15 million and you get the stepped up basis. That is 99% of estates.

My understanding is that estate/inheritance is a much bigger issue over there.

>>533580767
unfortunately for years property owners have objected to higher property taxes, so most places have offset that by inflating property values to bring in more govt money.

If you tax a transaction it doesn't land on the seller or the buyer just because of who pays the fee on paper.

How much of it is born by the buyer and how much by the seller is a product of price elasticity.
>>
>>533591212
Taxes are assessed fairly uniformly. And in my experience are always very low values. Far less than what they would sell for. The local government then comes up with a millage rate to apply to those values. However they still have to factor in recent sales prices to come up with values so yes if the market goes crazy taxes go up even if the millage rate doesnt.

Look at some point everyone grows old. Dating and having children isn't something people can put off indefinitely just because some boomers want to keep using younger generations for their own benefit.

30 isn't young. That's middle aged. That's past the age of having kids in any other society. Even 300 years ago that would be the age a lot of people die.

This entire "put off kids forever so boomer scan squeeze the housing market" has completely destroyed the west.

Yes.
Particularly for farmers, who own shitloads of land. It has caused a few problems recently when Starmer wanted to increase it.
This would mean when Daddy farmer dies, the kids would have to sell most of the land to pay the bill.

To answer your question in the US, your next offer is contingent on the sale of your old house. It's not hard to make work honestly.

These days a man would be most suited to start having children around 30 for realistic financial reasons. By that age the window gets tight for a woman of similar age. That's why it makes sense for a man let's say in his late 20s to date a woman in her lower 20s. The windows just align better. Roasties dont want to hear this though.

California is probably worse than anywhere else. But the west coast in general is bad. And any property is going to depend massively on factors like location, waterfront, coastal city, urban center, developing, good neighborhood, etc etc.

>Roasties don't want to hear it.
Sure it makes economic "sense". However, when it comes to biology, women are attracted to men their own age which makes this economic reality today against basic biological facts without removing women's rights and forcing marriage.

So, if we take away women's rights then a 30 year old can financially "realistically" date and marry a 20 year old. However, with women's rights, you're fighting against women's biology. This places us in an impossible situation where you can't have both.

Either we have women's rights and therefore young people need to be paid way more to have children. Or, we have this delusional roastie landscape of women's rights and boomers trying to squeeze every cent from younger people to prop up a lazy housing market.

Women's rights aren't going to magically disappear from the west at this point unless the west is 100% browned.

You're just too old for women in their 20s now and the economic landscape will only get worse.

This entire article along with economic factors explains why birthrates are in the gutter and why most young people are single when you have women's rights and low economic opportunities.

Anecdotally you see cases of younger women with men older than them. That's find, but on average it's not going to change the biological reality of women. I don't think anons realize just how fucked we are in the west with the current trajectory with all the copes such as "you'll just get better when you get older".
